Marvel’s new Punisher faces off against an oddly replica of a vintage villain

The newest Punisher from Marvel Comics is going up against a brand-new Jigsaw. The eponymous Punisher faces up against a lone investigator who is determined to keep the antihero imprisoned after nearly overcoming the terrifying foe known as the Fearmaster. That is, at least, until the Punisher reveals his opponent, and Jigsaw seems to know all there is to know about him, even if he is unsure of who that is. Billy Russo, the original Jigsaw, first appeared in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man in 1976. He was described as a sinister, menacing creature who had only bad things in store for the Wall-Crawler and his fellow heroes. Russo was one of the first to endure the Punisher’s wrath as a criminal involved in Frank Castle’s downfall and the killings of his family members. He barely avoided their first confrontation after having his face severed, which prompted him to take on the persona of Jigsaw.

Jigsaw harassed Castle relentlessly in the ensuing years, almost at every step. Jigsaw allied himself with a number of villains in his quest for retribution, including Wilson Fisk, the former Kingpin of Crime, Baron Zemo, and the Hood. The Hand, an ancient ninja sect led by writer Torunn Gronbekk and artist Rafael T. Pimentel, eventually brought Jigsaw down, but not until the events of 2022’s Punisher War Journal: Brother. Castle left the regular Marvel Universe and went to Weirdworld, where he has stayed ever since The Hand collapsed and their demonic Beast was killed by Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil. This made it possible for Joe Garrison, a former member of S.H.I.E.L.D. who shares an astonishingly similar past to his predecessor, to assume the role of the Punisher. Joe has so far had great success going up against opponents like the Fearmaster and the Night Shift baddies.
