The new Ultimate Doctor Doom from Marvel has just shared his greatest regret and his plans for fixing it. Tony Stark, Doom’s youthful colleague, gives him some serious criticism when he fails to complete yet another task. Doom hasn’t been lazily watching from the sidelines, as can be shown in The Ultimates. He’s been studying the past assiduously, both the one he knows and the one that The Maker, the evil Reed Richards, stole from him. In addition, Doom has been working nonstop to replicate the event that was supposed to result in the Fantastic Four’s amazing premiere, and he won’t stop until he does it perfectly.
The Fantastic Four—Reed Richards, Susan and Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm—were first introduced by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the pages of Fantastic Four in 1961. Since then, they have been among the greatest characters in the Marvel Universe. The group was subjected to intense cosmic rays while on a space mission, which changed the explorers’ chemical makeup. This led to the creation of the Fantastic Four as we know them today, with almost all incarnations of the group sharing the identical beginnings throughout the Multiverse. Sadly, the Fantastic Four have vanished from the current Ultimate Universe—the Earth-6160 reality—along with a great number of other beloved heroes. This universe, which The Maker discovered in Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch’s Ultimate Invasion, was remarkably similar to the first Ultimate Universe, which The Maker originated from. The Maker was able to essentially rewrite history as he saw fit, preventing the majority of the world’s heroes from ever being and making sure the remainder followed his orders, thanks to his almost infinite resources and knowledge of past events. No one could overthrow The Maker from his self-appointed position as the king of their world until the Ultimate Doom, the Reed Richards of Earth-6160, teamed up with Howard Stark. After the struggle, The Maker was imprisoned in an area of New York City that is now beyond limits, if only for the next year or two. Therefore, when The Maker eventually makes a comeback, characters like Doom and Tony Stark have assembled their own squad of Ultimates with the goal of changing history as much as possible.
