Marvel’s latest animated series, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” is set to debut its first two episodes on January 29, featuring Hudson Thames reprising his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man from “What If…?” Season 1. Thames, whose career has been relatively quiet since his Marvel debut, is excited to return to the character. In a recent interview with Collider’s Mike Thomas, Thames shared his initial concerns about the series. “My biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke,” he admitted, but he was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the writing. He found the series to be well-crafted and authentic, especially resonating with his experience as the oldest of five boys. Thames believes the show does justice to the high school experience and the lives of its characters.

The term “woke” has often been used as a dogwhistle in entertainment fan bases to criticize content perceived as overly focused on social justice issues. However, Thames’ positive reaction to the series suggests that “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” strikes a balance that feels genuine and relatable. Showrunner Jeff Trammell has emphasized the importance of representation in the series, aiming to bring to life a New York City that accurately reflects its diverse population. This commitment to inclusivity is evident in the casting choices, such as Colman Domingo as Norman Osborn, a role that has faced racist backlash despite the character not being inherently white in the comics.

In addition to Thames and Domingo, the series boasts an impressive cast, including Charlie Cox reprising his role as Daredevil, Hugh Dancy as Otto Octavius, Kari Wahlgren as Aunt May, Eugene Byrd as Lonnie Lincoln, Zeno Robinson as Harry Osborn, and Vincent D’Onofrio returning as Kingpin. With such a talented ensemble, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” promises to offer a fresh and engaging take on the beloved web-slinger’s adventures. Fans can look forward to seeing how this new iteration of Spider-Man navigates the challenges of high school and heroism in a vibrant, diverse New York City.
