The showrunner of the unexpected MCU finale to Agatha All Along has explained that Agatha was not a “good guy.” A lengthy flashback sequence was used to finish up the series with what felt more like an epilogue in the double-episode finale of Agatha All Along, which defied tradition. After previous episodes depicted Agatha preparing to make the ultimate sacrifice because of her maternal emotions for Billy Maximoff, Agatha All Along episode 9 helped to humanize Agatha as a loving mother, even though she was still eager to kill innocent witches. In an interview with Empire Magazine, showrunner Jac Schaeffer has recently clarified that Agatha’s humanization and development were never meant to turn her into a hero in the end. Even though Agatha was the main character in Agatha All Along, she was often presented as selfish and unconcerned with the well-being of her coven. Schaeffer is convinced that this does not make Agatha a decent person after all, even if it may have appeared like a turning point in her life when she finally submitted to Death in order to spare Billy. He says:
“We knew from the very beginning that Agatha would end as a ghost. She’s a terrific ghost. It felt very correct to do that. I do think we witness change in this woman, but she’s not a good guy at the end of the show, and I don’t think she ever will be.”
Agatha’s moral inexplicability is a prime example of what makes Agatha All Along so captivating. In contrast to most previous “anti-heroes,” Agatha consistently behaves self-centeredly and disregards the safety of others, a characteristic she keeps up to the show’s conclusion, when she first appears content to accept Billy’s sacrifice in order to stop Death from happening again. Although Agatha is eventually persuaded to make the sacrifice herself by the name of her son, Nicholas Scratch, Schaeffer’s explanation implies that this was insufficient to reverse decades of villainy. Given that her humanizing flashback sequence still has several instances of innocent people being murdered, this makes sense. The last images of Agatha All Along revealed her forming an alliance with Billy Maximoff, who, in contrast to Agatha, is consumed by remorse for the murders he unintentionally committed on the Witches’ Road. This might make for a very intriguing dynamic when Agatha and Billy Maximoff next reunite in the MCU, assuming Agatha hasn’t changed. Billy suggested that he would be a morally dubious superhero who is more susceptible to being influenced by Agatha’s malevolent influence by saying that he was “not that nice” when his abilities were initially revealed. I’m glad that Agatha’s allies didn’t allow her to give up her villainous nature. The reason Agatha is such a captivating character is ultimately because, despite refusing to whitewash her characterisation, Episode 9 allowed us to comprehend her on a deeper level. Since Agatha is now mostly harmless and, assuming she can’t drain life force as a ghost, she would make a very interesting addition to the heroes’ side in a future MCU film, knowing that she won’t pose a threat to beloved heroes.
