Multiple versions of the Spider-Verse sequel are now playing in theatres

Since the film’s release, at least two versions of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse featuring distinct humour and dialogue have been shown in theatres. Fans have started finding and releasing side-by-side footage of situations with slight changes on Twitter and Tiktok. Early in the film, Miguel O’Hara, played by Oscar Isaac, grudgingly requests that his AI aide Lyla “call for backup.” This is when the most obvious alteration takes place. One variation has a gleeful Lyla build a phone, take a picture of the two, and give Miguel bunny ears. She gestures towards Miguel in the other version. Associate editor of Across the Spider-Verse Andy Leviton verified the modifications. Leviton tweeted, “I was wondering when others may start noticing.

There are also some small variations that have been noted. The Spot notices that this experiment would kill him as he is about to insert his finger into a mini-collider, which is one modification. The Spot then continues, “Which would not be good,” in one version of the film, while in the other, he stops himself and says, “Oh, what the heck.” Additionally, viewers have seen different emotions from Miles Morales’ father Jefferson as he falls through a hole made by The Spot and changed conversation when Ben Reilly puts Miles Morales in a sleeper hold. In response to concerns over the sound mixing, Sony quickly released an upgraded version of the movie to theatres. Certain phrases in the movie, notably those spoken by Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) while she is playing the drums, have drawn criticism from viewers for being difficult to understand. In response, co-writer of the film Phil Lord tweeted that although Sony Pictures changed the audio in the latest version, fans might ask theatres to turn up the sound. The most recent remarks made by Leviton represent the first formal confirmation of additional film alterations.

The worldwide ticket sales for Across the Spider-Verse have reached $500 million after three weeks in theatres. The film generated $384 million worldwide and surpassed the box office profits of the first movie, Into the Spider-Verse, in just 12 days after its release in December 2018. On March 29, 2024, a third movie, Beyond the Spider-Verse, will be released. It will continue where the cliffhanger finale of Across the Spider-Verse left off.
