A new teaser featuring adolescent mutants Axo and Melee prior to their appearance in Exceptional X-Men has been released by Marvel Comics. Trista Marshall/Bronze, who attracts Kitty Pryde’s interest after encountering discrimination at a performance, was originally presented in the first issue. In October’s Exceptional X-Men, the emotionally charged Axo and the cunning combatant Melee will be front and center as they deal with prejudice and hostility that come with being a mutant in the post-Krakoa world. In the Marvel teaser, Axo is seen isolating himself at a soccer match while being abused by other kids. Seeing the attack from the field, Melee dashes to the bleachers to protect Axo from the bullies. On the last preview page, a dejected Kitty muses on her role in the new world and remembers her former mentor, Storm.
Marvel’s synopsis of the Exceptional X-Men says this: “Kate Pryde’s attempts to lead a regular, non-mutant existence are hilariously derailed when she gets caught up in a fight that was caused by two stubborn teenagers who have extraordinary skills that they, of course, are lousy at regulating. She’s vowed never to serve as a sensei, professor, mentor, teacher, or anything else that brings back memories of her previous existence. Will the White Queen, nevertheless, compel her to reach?” Ewing and Carnero’s Exceptional X-Men book, which is a part of Marvel’s X-Men relaunch, “From the Ashes,” is around Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost. After the Krakoan Age of the X-Men collapses, the old enemies are compelled to cooperate in order to train the next generation of mutant superheroes in the new global order.
Writer of the “exceptional” X-Men series Ewing talked about how Bronze, Axo, and Melee, the three new teenage mutant characters, connect to the word “exceptional.” “Those who are aware that I was a poet before turning to comic book writing will understand why, in a universe full of X-adjectives, Exceptional X-Men just sounds awesome. However, they are unique at this time because they don’t have as much of the same baggage as the protagonists of our prior books,” she added. “They have no ties to Krakoa, broader team politics, or the previous era of mutantdom,” Ewing went on, for better or worse. Like previous generations of adolescent mutants before them, Melee, Axo, and Bronze are just a bunch of awkward youngsters in the Midwest trying to figure out their talents.”
