On Secret Invasion, a fascinating rivalry has arisen, with James Rhodes revealed to be a Skrull. Given his role advising President Ritson and his importance to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, this is a major changer. More importantly, this development has fans wondering if Gravik has more Avengers under his control. It once again demonstrates how frightening and undetectable the Skrull menace is. Unfortunately, it makes them better terrorists, since Gravik’s strikes killed many people around Europe, including Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill. As additional information about Rhodey becomes available, it’s evident that Nick Fury made a huge mistake in managing this double agent and spy within America’s empire.
Fury is a knowledgeable man who works effectively in the shadows. It’s evident in Secret Invasion Episode 4 when he sneaks into Rhodey’s hotel and waits on him after a shower. They then engage in lighthearted conversation regarding Rhodey’s termination, with Fury joking about how he knows America’s government has been compromised. It’s a terrific comedy, to be sure, but it’s not something an intuitive Fury should see. This is actually the ideal time for Fury to knock the Skrull unconscious and extract information from him. Talos might then have snuck into Rhodey’s skin, cancelled the Ritson’s road trip, and ordered America to devise new strategies. After all, knowledge is power, and keeping the president in the dark hasn’t paid well. This would have avoided the subsequent combat, which resulted in Talos’ death and the president’s injury. More importantly, it would have provided Fury with what he requires the most: access and intelligence. In this programme, information is the ultimate currency, therefore one has to ask why Fury would let Rhodey go about his business while Gravik’s plot was still in operation. Their meticulous cat-and-mouse game is inflicting far too much collateral damage, and after unwittingly starting this conflict, Fury is now facilitating it.
A Rhodey who knows that much about Fury might be able to survive inquiry. Fury, on the other hand, has a wildcard. Sonya Falsworth, played by Olivia Colman, is one of the few people he can trust outside of Talos. He is aware of her MI: 6 abilities, and she is aware of the Skrull menace. Most importantly, she’s a torture specialist, therefore it’s odd that he doesn’t call her with Rhodey in tow. Hiding information isn’t working, so Fury should make Sonya a full-fledged collaborator. The more he provides for her, the more he may have her monitor her own unit, perhaps edging closer to being a member of his. With Rhodey as a prisoner, they could gather a lot more information about world powers and governments conspiring against them, bringing them closer to the Skrull Council. Her prime minister is a Skrull cabinet member, thus with Rhodey in their control, they may learn more about Gravik’s objectives. That’s not to suggest Gravik wouldn’t improvise and reset if he discovered he’d lost his inside agent. But the goal is to put him on the defensive, prolong the mission, and have Gravik perceive Fury as an equaliser. Ultimately, choosing Rhodey would have been the correct choice considering Fury is currently on the bench and out of the game. Unfortunately, his method isn’t working, and with Gravik’s tactics and contingency plans in full swing, it’s easy to picture him dealing much more damage.
