The saying “don’t trust anyone” rings as true as ever as Secret Invasion goes on. Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, is finding out about the Skrulls’ ambitions to take over firsthand as he learns more about them. Fury is clearly upset since his plan to grant them safety and locate them a new home backfired. Characters like Talos and the evil G’iah add to the suspense. Strangely, when Secret Invasion reveals yet more treachery, the show links Priscilla Fury, Fury’s wife, to a significant figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is none other than Black Widow, suggesting there are many more mysteries in the past than previously thought.
Fans discover Priscilla is actually Varra in the first act of Episode 3, “Betrayed,” a Skrull who assisted in bringing refugees to Earth and helped them establish temporary new lives there. And it comes out that she is a spy as well as a fixer. In reality, she gives Fury the knowledge he need about the Red Room in his early days at SHIELD when he first encounters her in human form in New York City. Fans of Black Widow will be aware that this is the initiative Dreykov employed to produce assassins to manipulate global politics and eliminate powerful individuals. So, if this encounter took place in 1998, it was before Natasha Romanoff undertook covert operations with Hawkeye and defected to SHIELD to serve for Fury. This indicates that Varra may have had a part in handing Fury the key to flip Nat, a procedure the MCU has been hazy about in favour of emphasising memories of her Red Room training.
Fury is now working his way down the SHIELD ladder in 1998 and utilising the Skrulls to assist him advance. And Varra’s knowledge of a secure Red Room raises the possibility that she disguised herself as an assassin. One has to wonder whether she ever told Nat that the grass is greener on the other side because she did adopt previous human forms before this one. Even though Nat was unaware that Varra was a Skrull, her art may have alluded to the sense of home because Varra is about a greater calling. Nat battled for it because she was aware of how her parents had gaslighted her and her sister. It furthers the drama of Varra’s personal displacement and desire for a caring community. In that regard, Varra is a precursor to the liberation warrior Nat would later develop into.
Even some people have speculated about this Easter egg. As she and Fury got closer, Varra planted the seeds for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. If the person Fury ultimately fell in love with gave him access to a vision for something far greater, it would be extremely poetic. In the end, it’s uncertain until the MCU releases more information, but it feels spiritual considering that Nat has previously altered her appearance using technology, taken on other personas, and, like Varra, only wished to improve the world. Sadly, it does feel like a lot has to be addressed as to why she would turn on her husband and the world in this way—something an Avenger wouldn’t do—especially when Rhodey has been suggested to be a Skrull and Varra appears to be working with him.
