Paul Bettany reveals the startling backstory of the tragic death scene in Vision

One of the many tragic events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the death of Vision in Avengers: Infinity War. According to Paul Bettany, who plays Vision, the scene was actually improvised. In the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron, Paul Bettany revealed in an interview that he was a synthetic humanoid made by Ultron and that he was romantically involved with Scarlet Witch played by Elizabeth Olsen. In the 2018 film Avengers: Infinity War, Bettany and Olsen improvised the scene because the original plan for Vision’s death didn’t work out. Their sad love tale concluded with his death. “Leaders ‘Hey, listen, can you just improvise this scene?’ the Russo Brothers approached Bettany and Olsen. And I ask myself, “What?” “Why not improvise as a robot that gets killed?” I don’t have any context.” Bettany gave a share. “And Lizzie was giggling about it, and we have such a laid-back relationship that… Other than that, I’m not sure how it would have gone since we both have a great deal of faith in one another, and we managed to come to an agreement.” The actor said that he had no idea who would die in true Marvel manner, saying, “It was hilarious.” It wasn’t until the day before or something like that any of us knew who would pass away,” Bettany added. Bettany said, “Everyone was like, well, I guess I gotta take the kids out of private school after they showed us a sort of pre-visualization of that.”

After his tragic passing, Vision returned to the character of Olsen in the highly regarded Disney+ miniseries WandaVision. The animated series What If… on Disney+ also features alternate versions of Vision. Though Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed the series, there have been rumours about a Vision Quest series that would bring the character back. Furthermore, it’s unknown if Olsen will rejoin the MCU. There are no formal intentions for Scarlet Witch to make a comeback, as she seems to have passed away at the conclusion of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Bettany portrayed Tony Stark’s AI, JARVIS, prior to taking on the role of Vision. He jokingly said that Jon Favreau, the director of 2008’s Iron Man, requested someone with “no personality” when he got the call. Later, he transforms into a synthetic entity with the aid of JARVIS and the Mind Stone. “Look, I’m directing this thing called Iron Man and I need somebody who has no personality at all, and I instantly thought of you,” said Jon Favreau, who portrayed my agent in the film Wimbledon. How would you turn that down?” Bettany enquired.

I had a great time doing it, and in the end, I was able to fix everyone’s problem and clarify anything that they hadn’t been able to explain on camera by simply saying, “The bad guys are coming, and they’re right behind you!” or anything else… Everyone seemed to laugh at me, and they said things like, “Oh, that would be nice to have him on set.” That’s my theory about what transpired. I believe they just assumed hanging out with me would be enjoyable.” Paul Bettany has a number of projects planned, even though it’s still unknown what role he will play in the MCU. He will play the lead role in Robert Zemeckis’ drama Here, starring Kelly Reilly, Rob Wright, and Tom Hanks. Additionally, he will appear in Kwame Kwei-Armah’s The Collaboration as Pop Art great Andy Warhol.
