Paul Rudd made a surprising confession about his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) during a cameo appearance on Saturday Night Live (SNL). The sketch, which celebrated Martin Short’s induction into the “Five-Timers Club,” featured several A-list stars, including Rudd, who playfully revealed, “Ant-Man’s powers aren’t good.” This light-hearted moment was part of a larger joke about the exclusive club’s camaraderie and the freedom to share secrets among its members. Former SNL cast member Kristen Wiig further encouraged honesty, setting the stage for Rudd’s candid remark. Scarlett Johansson, another Avenger in the sketch, added to the humor by slamming the door in the face of her husband, SNL’s Colin Jost, though she refrained from critiquing her own character, Black Widow.
Rudd’s comment may have been a throw-away line, but it touches on a genuine critique that some fans have about Ant-Man’s powers. The MCU’s decision to focus on Scott Lang rather than Hank Pym for its Ant-Man films has been a point of contention for some viewers. Additionally, the explanations of Pym Particles have been inconsistent, leading to further confusion. In the first Ant-Man movie, Hank Pym explains that the particles cause people or objects to shrink by reducing the distance between their atoms, maintaining their strength and mass. However, this explanation becomes problematic when Ant-Man stands on another character’s shoulder without them noticing, and even more so when the quantum realm is introduced, as Hank claims Scott needs to shrink “smaller than an atom” to enter it.
The quantum realm and time travel elements involving Pym Particles have led many fans to view them as a convenient plot device rather than a rigorous scientific concept. Despite these critiques, Ant-Man remains a beloved character in the MCU. As of now, it’s unclear when Ant-Man, The Wasp, or any related characters will appear next in the MCU. However, with two Avengers titles slated for Phase Six, it’s likely that Ant-Man will make an appearance, continuing to play a role in the ever-expanding Marvel universe.
