Marvel has revealed the premise of the new series, which will be about a married Spider-Man! Marvel recently announced that Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto will be the creative team behind the new Ultimate Spider-Man ongoing series, which will debut in January as the first new series in Marvel’s brand-new take on the Ultimate Universe! An older Peter Parker, married to Mary Jane, will be the star of the next Ultimate Spider-Man television series. The pair will have two kids together.
Hickman stated, “Ultimate Spider-Man is a book I never thought I’d be writing,” in response to the announcement of the series. It’s comparable to Peter B. Parker in several ways.” This alludes to the Spider-Man, played by Jake Johnson in Into the Spider-Verse. An older version of Spidey, he reconciles with Mary Jane in the first movie, and we learn that they are now parents in Across the Spider-Verse. Hickman provided additional information regarding the choice to have a married Peter and Mary Jane as the series’ main characters in a press release from Marvel. “We really wanted to lean into him starting his super hero life from a very different place than what’s traditionally expected,” Hickman said of the decision to write a book about an older Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man. One of the numerous choices we took to emphasise that this is a very “different” sort of Spider-Man tale is that Peter and MJ are married.” For the first four issues of the series, artist Elizabeth Torque will create a number of alternative covers that show the relationship between Peter and Mary Jane in this alternate universe.
This direction is noteworthy, of course, because in the mainstream Marvel Universe, Peter and Mary Jane were wed for twenty years prior to the events of the 2007 storyline, “One More Day,” which ended their marriage. In that storyline, Peter and Mary Jane made a deal with the demonic Mephisto to give up their marriage in exchange for Mephisto saving Peter’s Aunt May’s life (after Aunt May was shot by a bullet intended for Spider-Man, driving Peter nearly insane with guilt). Dan Slott and Adam Kubert created Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, an alternate reality miniseries set during the 2015 Secret Wars crossover event. It featured a married Peter and Mary Jane, as well as a superpowered daughter that was subsequently featured in Across the Spider-Verse. Later, Ryan Stegman and Gerry Conway created a continuous series based on the same universe. However, this new Ultimate Spider-Man series is the biggest Marvel series to date to feature a married Peter and Mary Jane. Additionally, the previously mentioned Stegman produced a promotional video featuring the Parkers.
