The Quantum Ream from Ant-Man 3 was revealed by Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige at the press conference for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. Marvel fans have only had brief glimpses of the enigmatic Quantum Realm, just like Kang the Conqueror. On February 17, however, everything is about to change as this peculiar and frequently perplexing universe assumes centre stage as the threequel’s main setting. While the Quantum Realm’s full potential and future effects on the MCU are unknown to fans, Kevin Feige gave them a subatomic crash course before the release of Ant-Man 3.
An Explanation of Ant-Quantum Man’s Realm
Kevin Feige made an effort to explain Quantum Realm and its MCU history during the press conference for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. The MCU CEO began by stating that “the first ‘Ant-Man’ film” introduced viewers to the Quantum Realm, and that it was Paul Rudd, who played Ant-Man, who originally suggested pursuing the “storytelling, and inventiveness, and fun that you might have” with a subatomic realm.
“Well, the first ‘Ant-Man’ movie is where we first saw it. And I was recently reminded that Paul Rudd had the idea to “What if we explore this quantum mechanics” early on before we started filming the first “Ant-Man” movie, which I’m happy to discuss in-depth today if you guys want. The quantum level has a profound impact on how things behave. And Paul was mentioning how much fun you could have there while telling stories and using your imagination.
Marvel Studios disclosed additional information about the Quantum Realm during the Ant-Man series. We “had a taste of it” in the conclusion of 2015’s Ant-Man, according to Feige, and that is what motivated us to take it farther in Avengers: Endgame.
The first “Ant-Man” film was primarily about getting to know the characters and their backstories, but at the very end, we got a taste of it, and that is what led to where we took it in “Avengers: Endgame.”
The president of Marvel Studios explained that the Quantum Realm is “an whole universe below the surface” and that it exists “on the subatomic level where space and time work differently:”
“And it’s a location where time and space behave differently because it’s on the subatomic scale. And in “Endgame,” at Scott Lang’s suggestion, that gave us the ability to time travel. And it enabled us to have this whole, manic Quantum-ness in the movie, where we go to a point that only Janet had ever seen before and, as Evangeline said, she didn’t talk about it too much, where there is an entire universe below the surface, and where we meet all kinds of fun, crazy characters.“
Regarding the Quantum Realm’s visual style, Feige acknowledged Ant-Man director Peyton Reed as having “worked on this aesthetic” and said that the graphics had been “in the works for a very long time”:
“Well, Peyton [Reed], I think you can talk about that a little bit more because it took 3.5 years to develop this look and take audiences somewhere they had never been. In regards to travelling there and meeting a family, we frequently discussed how The Wizard of Oz is similar to this situation. However, Peyton and his team were solely responsible for the visuals, which had been in the works for a very long time.“
Fans of Quantumania have expressed doubt and even criticism about the CGI-heavy universe and its peculiar look even though the film hasn’t yet been released in theatres. The portrayal of the Quantum Realm in the movie and how confused it is will likely be received by reviewers is a crucial topic, especially given that this MCU setting could be here to stay. After all, Kang lives in the Quantum Realm, which has even been called “the bottom of the Multiverse,” whether he likes it or not.
Since the MCU is now mired in the Multiverse Saga, it is a matter of when rather than if a Marvel project would return to this strange, time-traveling universe. For the time being, in typical Kang manner, only time will tell how this Marvel Cinematic Reality universe will be welcomed and how it will continue to affect the Multiversal storyline inside the MCU.
On February 17, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania hits cinemas.
