Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the highly anticipated sequel to the wildly successful animated superhero film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is set to release on June 2, 2023. Fans of the original movie are eagerly awaiting the return of Miles Morales, the young Spider-Man from an alternate universe, and the introduction of new Spider-Variants.
However, it seems that the film will also have a little fun at the expense of its own studio executives. In a recent interview with Empire, writer-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller revealed that they incorporated their interactions with Sony executives into the film’s script.
According to Lord, a line from the original Spider-Verse movie, in which Peter B. Parker exclaims “He can’t do it on command!” in reference to Miles’ power to turn invisible, came from trying to explain Miles’ abilities to studio executives. Lord and Miller incorporated a similar moment in Across the Spider-Verse, where an executive was asking them to make something about a character clearer, so they put that conversation straight into the film.
It’s not uncommon for creatives in the film industry to have a somewhat contentious relationship with studio executives. Studio notes and feedback can often be frustrating or unhelpful, and Lord and Miller’s decision to poke fun at their own bosses is both amusing and relatable. It’s also a testament to their ability to find humor in stressful situations, as Miller noted that they are always striving to make things “funnier or more emotional,” even if it causes behind-the-scenes troubles.
Despite any potential behind-the-scenes drama, fans are hoping that the sequel will live up to the original’s success. Into the Spider-Verse was a commercial and critical triumph, introducing audiences to a fresh take on the Spider-Man character and bringing much-needed diversity to the superhero genre. With the promise of even more Spider-Variants in Across the Spider-Verse, fans have reason to be excited for what’s to come.
It’s unclear exactly which moment in the film Lord was referring to when he incorporated his interactions with Sony into the script, but given the irreverent tone of the franchise, it’s likely to fit right in. Fans will just have to wait until June 2, 2023, to see it for themselves.
