Producer Teases Ant-Man 3: Quantumania’s MCU Multiverse Connections

An Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania producer described how the Multiverse would play a role in the most recent MCU threequel. Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror, who aims to begin his reign of Multiverse terror in the first project of Phase 5, will make his initial appearance in Ant-Man 3 as the prime version of the Multiverse Saga’s ultimate bad guy. After Phase 4’s Loki revealed He Who Remains in July 2021, this will be the second Kang variant that fans have seen, but this Kang will be the one who presents the greatest threat to all life and existence across the Multiverse.

It is still unclear how extensively the Multiverse will be discussed in Ant-Man 3, especially given that the storyline is fully immersed in the Quantum Realm in Phases 5 and 6. Kang and the Multiverse are confirmed to be major plot aspects during those two phases. Stephen Broussard, VP of Production & Development at Marvel Studios, hinted in the official press release for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania that the Multiverse will play a significant role in this upcoming film.

Although the characters are the major emphasis of this movie, Broussard pointed out that “the headiness of the Multiverse” and the Quantum Realm are also significant factors in why this sequel is such a game-changer for the MCU:

“One of our philosophies that we’ve always applied at the studio is to just go back to character, and to root it in character, and the science-fiction and the world-building is fun but ultimately it’s window dressing to the characters who are on this journey. I think as long as we never forget that this is a story about a father and his daughter reconnecting, which essentially is what this film is, then the headiness of the Multiverse, the headiness of the Quantum Realm sorts itself out because you only need to understand that it’s a father-and-daughter story.”

Peyton Reed, the film’s director, expressed his excitement for working on Ant-Man 3: Winter Soldier by stating that Kang is “the most powerful creature in the Multiverse” as he faces up against perhaps “the ‘weakest’ Avenger” in Scott Lang.

“A lot of people might consider Ant-Man the ‘weakest’ Avenger: ‘What can that guy do? He shrinks and talks to ants. That’s ridiculous.’ Putting that guy up against Kang the Conqueror, who’s the most powerful being in the multiverse—that seemed really exciting to us.”

Given that Kang the Conqueror is the main antagonist of the “Multiverse Saga,” which Marvel Studios called Phases 4 through 6, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Multiverse will be included in Ant-Man 3. Since Kang is one of the comic book characters most adept at navigating the Multiverse and manipulating it to his benefit, many people anticipate that once his prime form manifests, this idea will be further explored. Although the Quantum Realm may allow that narrative element to become true, it is yet unknown if this film will travel to other dimensions or use Multiversal heroes in the same manner as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness did. The recently released second trailer for the threequel made a suggestion that multiple Scott Langs might need to come together and cooperate in order to defeat Kang, though this could also be due to Kang using his superpowers in combination with the wildness of the Quantum Realm or other heroes from across the Multiverse. Whatever the answers, this film will only be the beginning of future Kang adventures, especially when he advances into Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in 2025. On February 17, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will hit cinemas.
