Revealed: Green Goblin’s one mandate from Marvel Studios for Spider-Man: No Way Home

The Green Goblin, one of Spider-Man: No Way Home’s deadliest foes, will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the film, according to Ryan Meinerding, Head of Visual Development at Marvel Studios. In a passage from Spider-Man: No Way Home-The Art of the Movie, Meinerding recalled that because The Green Goblin is a character who had a “very iconic, heightened look” from 2002’s Spider-Man, the film’s production team was “tasked with seeing how much of that [they] could keep while still making it feel like it existed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”The MCU is heavily focused on technology, so he said, “I believe Adi Granov was the first to try to add the hood. It was all focused at essentially trying to ground the character a little bit more, and everyone was producing such beautiful work. Visual Development Concept Illustrator Phil Saunders created some very dynamic, stunning illustrations of the Goblin on the glider prepared to launch pumpkins.

Saunders added that the team had considered giving The Green Goblin “access to a lot of MCU tech and being able to generate a new suit for himself,” along with various ideas of what it could be. He mentioned that one such idea was the requirement to include his purple-and-green colours from the comics.”Take the suit from the Raimi-verse and just MCU it up a bit,” Saunders said in his conclusion, adding, “A lot of the effort that I put into the suit was in that direction, trying to make something that, at first glance, is clearly recognisable as the Raimi suit, but just has a little bit of an upgrade to today’s standards and expectations for Super Hero costume design and fabrication.”

In addition to this advice, concept art from the book suggested that The Green Goblin will have his own Iron Man armour, with the latter version sporting purple and green hues rather than red and green. Another image featured a confrontation between Doctor Octopus and The Green Goblin. Willem Dafoe, who reprised his role as The Green Goblin in the movie, offered his opinion on the subject in 2022, highlighting the critiques levelled against the character’s mask. Despite this, Norman Osborn’s cast in No Way Home has no formal justification from Marvel.
