Robert Downey Jr., actor of Iron Man and Oppenheimer, notes a connection between his characters, Tony Stark and Lewis Strauss. In an interview, Downey Jr. drew comparisons between Iron Man’s renowned tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his own performance and preparation for the role of Strauss in Oppenheimer. The actor claimed that in order for such characters to come across well on screen, he had to completely dedicate himself to them.”Three times in my career, the prospect of perhaps landing a part has driven me to an absolute obsession. It was Chaplin’s first time. Tony Stark in Iron Man the second time,” he said.”And the third time, for Oppenheimer, I got the trifecta; you’re lucky if this occurs a few times.” It was with Lewis Strauss. Being a bit of a Cold War nerd, I knew a little bit about my role. I have no idea why I’ve been fixated on it.”

With his portrayal of the valiant figure in the Iron Man trilogy and the Avengers films, as well as his moving farewell in Avengers: Endgame, Downey Jr. cemented his legacy as Iron Man. He did, however, demonstrate his versatility by playing Strauss, the former acting U.S. Secretary of Commerce, which contributed to Oppenheimer being the all-time highest-grossing biopic. Christopher Nolan, the film’s director, praised Downey Jr.’s performance and said that his choice of character for Iron Man was among the best in cinematic history. In 2023, Oppenheimer achieved global fame as the third-highest-grossing film, with over $955 million earned at the box office globally and a potential nomination for major awards. The film explores the conflict between Strauss and Oppenheimer. Downey Jr. acted alongside main actor Cillian Murphy, who played the famed theoretical physicist, J. Robert Oppenheimer. The “rivalry” between the two characters, in the actor’s opinion, only improved the film. I was oblivious to his feud with Oppenheimer. However, it became evident after reading the screenplay for 20 minutes that it would have a theme.”

Despite Tony’s passing in Endgame, Downey Jr. has long been associated with a possible MCU comeback; an insider rumour from November of last year said he had agreed to reprise his role as Iron Man. Marvel President Kevin Feige squashed the idea of a comeback, claiming they won’t “touch that moment again” (Iron Man’s demise), even if he hasn’t discussed the potential. The upcoming full-length part for Downey Jr. is expected to be in a movie based on the children’s adventure book High in the Clouds. As an executive producer on Perry Mason and Sweet Tooth, he has been keeping himself occupied in the meanwhile. He is also scheduled to play a recurring part in the upcoming HBO historical dark comedy drama The Sympathiser.
