Robert Downey Jr. is set to make a triumphant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a series of upcoming projects, taking on the mantle of not just one, but two iconic characters. At the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, Downey revealed his comeback by stepping into the shoes of Doctor Doom, one of the most formidable villains in the Marvel Comics. This announcement was met with widespread excitement, as fans eagerly await the actor’s portrayal of the Latverian ruler and his impact on the MCU.

Downey’s role as Doctor Doom is expected to be central to the narrative of the upcoming Avengers films. The first of these, now titled Avengers: Doomsday, is set to release on May 1, 2026, and is directed by the Russo Brothers. While details about the plot are scarce, the inclusion of Doctor Doom suggests a storyline that will challenge the Avengers in ways they have never faced before. The following film, Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for May 7, 2027, also under the direction of the Russo Brothers, is expected to feature a critical multiversal showdown, with Downey’s Doom playing a pivotal role.

In addition to his live-action roles, Robert Downey Jr. is also set to appear in two new attractions at the Avengers Campus at the Disneyland Resort. The first, Avengers Infinity Defense, is a high-tech ride that allows fans to jump between worlds and realities to stop a Thanos variant. The second, Stark Flight Lab, is a simulation ride that allows fans to experience flight in Tony Stark’s lab. Both attractions confirm Downey’s presence in the theme park universe, where he reprises his role as Tony Stark.

The speculation surrounding Robert Downey Jr.’s involvement in The Fantastic Four: First Steps continues to grow. Given Doom’s deep ties to the Fantastic Four in the comics, his appearance in the film would be a natural fit. However, with Galactus already confirmed as the film’s antagonist, it remains to be seen how Downey’s Doctor Doom will fit into the narrative. Director Matt Shakman’s non-denial has only fueled the speculation, leaving fans eagerly anticipating any news about Downey’s potential fifth MCU project.
