Ryan Reynolds reveals that Deadpool and Wolverine's title was changed after it was originally leaked.

Deadpool & Wolverine was not the original title for the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film. While serving as a guest host on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Ryan Reynolds explained why the original title was altered at the last minute. “I’ve never mentioned this story elsewhere, but the film was initially titled Deadpool & Friend. “I am actually not joking,” Reynolds informed co-star Hugh Jackman when appearing as a guest co-host on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “On the eve of the Super Bowl, the Super Bowl is where we originally debuted the trailer for Deadpool and not Friend, but Wolverine it leaked because of the son of the bitches on the internet. The title leaked. We looked at it and listened, and they fucking loathed the title. We weren’t feeling very comfortable about that anymore.”

Reynolds noted that, while it took some convincing, they were able to persuade Marvel Studios and Disney to alter the title to Deadpool & Wolverine, despite marketing materials bearing the previous title already being created. “We were like, ‘No, we’re fucking changing the title; I’m never calling this movie Deadpool & Friend.'” They did it. “They really changed the title,” Reynolds explained. Deadpool & Friend, the original title of Deadpool & Wolverine, makes a joke Hugh Jackman made on social media immediately after the Super Bowl teaser debuted much funnier. On X, Jackman shared a revised title card for the Marvel film that said “Wolverine & Asshole,” which was most likely prepared prior to the title change to mock the Deadpool & Friend moniker. Set six years after the events of Deadpool 2, Deadpool & Wolverine opens with Wade Wilson working as a car salesman. However, Time Variance Authority agents kidnap him from his quiet existence and send him on a quest to preserve the multiverse, led by Mr. Paradox. A Wolverine variation depicted by Jackman will assist him on this quest. Deadpool and Wolverine is Marvel Studios’ first X-Men film and the first to be released as part of the MCU.
