When you thought Marvel couldn’t possibly bring on any more famous talent, they were able to snag Oscar winner Olivia Colman. The time was ideal for the actress to make her debut in the upcoming series Secret Invasion, where she’ll take on the role of Sonya Falsworth, a senior MI6 agent whose prestige is on par with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. The actress had long been vying for a chance to join the MCU. In the Phase 5 series, the pair will cooperate to stop the perilous Skrull invasion, with each leader drawing power from the other’s presence. Colman and Jackson discussed the one area where Falsworth could be vulnerable in a recent interview with Collider’s own Perri Nemiroff. They also discussed how much fun it was to collaborate with one another. Nemiroff peppered the co-stars with probing questions, and Colman was asked to analyse Falsworth’s perceptions of her biggest strengths and faults. The Empire of Light actor explains that in the beginning of the series, Falsworth is very self-assured and “she thinks that no one’s gonna get the better of her,” adding that “she kind of feels like she knows everything.”
Colman needed a moment to reflect on her flaws before responding, “This is in-depth stuff that I never thought about when I was actually filming it!” After giving it some consideration, she says that as the series goes on, Falsworth becomes more emotionally invested, adding that it’s “something she’s not used to.” Jackson adds to the conversation to support his colleague agent, claiming that Falsworth “has a level of sentimentality for Fury that she doesn’t have for other people for some reason.” Colman describes her character as “cross,” and her tight relationship with Fury may be a sign of the agent’s eventual demise.
Colman and Jackson are without a doubt two names at the top of the list when it comes to Hollywood icons. The pair had never before worked across from one another, and they both felt that the experience had improved the depth of both their acting and their character development. Colman claims that upon entering the set, where many of the other people had previously collaborated not just once, but several times, she was in a complete new girl situation. She continued by praising Jackson for being “loud and warm” and sharing a recollection of feeling a hand on her shoulder and hearing the words “We’re gonna have so much fun! “Colman claims that Jackson’s “generosity” and “kindness” allowed her to totally immerse herself in the Secret Invasion universe.
On the other hand, for Jackson, who has played the stern role since 2008’s Iron Man, the set seemed like a second home. One could believe they have a complete understanding of their character after 15 years of playing the same part in several scripts, but Jackson claims that his moments with Colman allowed him to access a different level of Fury. According to the Pulp Fiction actor, several of the sequences were only performed once before the actors were free to behave with “planned spontaneity,” which Colman, in his opinion, totally embraced. “She surprised me with the level of sincerity and care she showed this guy, even though she was telling him he was flawed, and it allowed me to find another direction to take Nick Fury in other than that, you know, smart-ass stuff he always comes up with,” said the author.
