Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, claims that portraying one character regularly has “no longevity” and that she wants to be renowned for more than just that. Olsen discussed her future in the MCU in an interview she gave before to the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike. After spending the previous several years only working on Marvel productions, the actor made it clear that she is ready for new parts and just wants to update her resume. “I’m attempting to determine…For the last four years, specifically, my production has been Marvel,” Olsen stated. I don’t desire…It’s not that I object to being identified with simply this persona. However, I firmly believe that in order to achieve equilibrium, I must rebuild other components. With her portrayal as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, the renegade former Avenger notorious for altering reality and using chaos magic wherever she went, Olsen established herself as a genuine fixture of the MCU. Olsen says it’s time for a shift since she won’t let herself to be pigeonholed into one role after portraying the part in WandaVision and the sequel to Doctor Strange. I want to make films so much right now, she declared. And I really hope that some of them work out the way I think they can. But yes, I definitely require that. Simply said, I need more people in my life. One character cannot last forever.
Olsen has previously expressed a desire to work on projects outside of the Marvel universe. It’s been over ten years since she first played Scarlet, and she told Variety in June that she doesn’t miss the character and isn’t eager to take it on again. I have enjoyed it. And I believe that the fact that I am so very pleased of what we accomplished is the reason I don’t phone Kevin Feige every day with new ideas. WandaVision, in my opinion, was a completely unexpected chance. I would be proud of what we created even if someone told me I had been fired from the Marvel movies. She also suggested that stars entering the MCU only sign up for one film so they can decide if Marvel is the appropriate match for them and have more say over the projects they want to work on. In addition, Olsen stated that “Marvel obligations” and the pandemic prohibited her from enjoying other jobs beginning in 2017. She cited that she enjoyed playing in films like Wind River and Ingrid Goes West because they “were so different and you can’t compare them.” Olsen originally made an appearance in the 2014 film Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She then starred in the Captain America sequel Civil War and the last three Avengers films, Age of Ultron, Infinity War, and Endgame. Olsen will reprise her role in Season 2 of What If…?, which is anticipated to be published in 2024, while offering ambiguous answers on her MCU future, including the possibility of Scarlet returning in Agatha: Coven of Chaos. Her next film will be the family drama His Three Daughters, in which she will co-star with Natasha Lyonne and Carrie Coon.
