Wanda’s hold on the people of Westview was already twisted, but Agatha All Along, Marvel’s most recent Disney+ series, took it to new heights. Wanda Maximoff lays a jinx on the town of Westview in WandaVision, trapping the locals in her idyllic sitcom world. Wanda’s neighbors are trapped in a nightmare where they have to accept whatever reality Wanda creates, while she lives her ideal life with Vision and their children. Even if Wanda finally acts morally by releasing them, the harm has already been done. Three years have passed since the events of WandaVision, when Agatha All Along, the sequel, begins. When Agatha eventually breaks free from the Scarlet Witch’s enchantment, viewers are shown how Wanda’s influence continues to affect the people of Westview. But this revelation just serves to deepen Wanda’s spell, as she didn’t have to cast a spell on the locals in order to live in a welcoming neighborhood.
Agatha All Along’s debut episode parodies intense, HBO-caliber police dramas, evoking the vibe of True Detective or Mare of Easttown. As the episode comes to a close, Agatha breaks free from Wanda’s enchantment and realizes this detective narrative is all imaginary. It is revealed that Agatha has been under Wanda’s control for three years, during which time the people of Westview have been supporting her in whatever way they can—such as by bringing her groceries—and caving in to her visions. The folks living at Westview proved to be wonderful, welcoming Agatha despite her altercation with Wanda and her subsequent delusions. Even if someone has erred, they still welcome strangers into their society. Their kindness indicates that Wanda didn’t have to enchant the people of Westview since they probably would have accepted her into the neighborhood even if she hadn’t been able to use magic. The pity viewers ought to have had for Wanda in WandaVision is diminished, and she comes off looking much worse for what she did to them.
Three years after Wanda’s spell was cast, the Westview community in Agatha All Along is still in shock. The villagers won’t mention her name, and the only thing left of her home is some graffiti that reads “Evil witch.” Sharon Davis needs to correct Agatha during their talk when Agatha refers to her as Ms. Hart, which was her name while under Wanda’s sway. The fact that Westview’s citizens are still scarred from Wandavision’s occurrences is a deft method of connecting the two programs. Because of the lasting effects of Wanda’s acts, they are far more detrimental than what WandaVision depicted. The collective anguish of Westview’s people demonstrates the terrible consequences of Wanda’s spell, and it’s difficult to regard Wanda as a hero in her play any more. Wanda owes the residents of Westview more than just an apology for what she did so they can move on, should she decide to make a comeback in Agatha All Along or elsewhere in the MCU.
