Sean Gunn believes he should earn more residuals from Gilmore Girls money, a position supported by colleagues during the present SAG-AFTRA strike. On the first day of the strike, Gunn walked out and joined the picket lines, and when questioned about the impasse, he was honest with The Hollywood Reporter. The Guardians of the Galaxy star claims he has yet to be appropriately rewarded for his role in the Gilmore Girls cast. “I was on a television show called Gilmore Girls for a long time that has brought in massive profits for Netflix,” he explained. “It’s been one of their most popular shows for well over a decade. It’s streamed again and over, and I see hardly none of the income that comes from it.”
Gunn’s depiction of Kirk Gleason, the colourful, fun-loving, job-hopping citizen of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, won over Gilmore Girls fans. The actor portrayed Kirk for the whole seven seasons of the programme, which ran from 2000 to 2007. He also returned to the role in 2016, when Netflix picked up Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life for a one-season run. Gunn stated that he is protesting Netflix in particular since he has not been paid his residuals despite the show’s continuous success on the streaming channel.
Gunn is referring to the residuals owed by Warner Bros. Discovery, the company in charge of producing the programme and licencing it to Netflix. Gilmore Girls first aired on The WB and The CW before becoming one of Netflix’s most popular shows. Regardless, the cast gets paid the same regardless of the show’s audience reach or broadcast location. The success of the series on the streaming platform does not imply increased residuals for the performers, as current agreements with the studio require. Gunn petitioned for a fair and favourable reform, which was a running agreement among walkout participants. “Sharing in streaming revenue should be reconsidered.” As Fran Drescher (President of SAG-AFTRA) recently stated, “the entire business model has really fallen apart, and we kind of need to restructure it from the top.” He also addressed the rising worry about the influence of AI on the industry. “I can’t pretend to understand all the facets of the AI issue,” he stated, “but I know that being compensated for use of one’s likeness is incredibly important and needs to be an equitable part of this deal.”
Following unsuccessful discussions with studios and streamers on Wednesday, SAG-AFTRA members joined the walkout on Friday.
