The role of Bucky Barnes in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts has been discussed by Sebastian Stan. Over the years, Stan has experienced a lot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character began fighting with Chris Evans’s Captain America during World War II, was thought to be dead, and then reappeared as the Winter Soldier—a mind-controlled killing machine—and was forced to accept responsibility for his previous deeds while Hydra’s influence was still present. Bucky will make his MCU comeback next, after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, as a crucial part of Thunderbolts’ all-star lineup. Sebastian Stan clarified Bucky Barnes’ role on the Thunderbolts squad in an interview with Variety. As Bucky Barnes enters the mental institution run by Nurse Ratched, he will join a group of “chaotic and degenerate characters” that are reminiscent of Jack Nicholson’s Randle McMurphy. The actor likened his part in the MCU picture to that of the beloved movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. According to Stan, Bucky is the one who needs to bring the Thunderbolts together. See the complete quotation below:
“It was similar to ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,’ where a man entered a chaotic and degenerate group and managed to bring them all together.”
Stan went on to discuss Bucky’s development and how similar he is to the other characters in Thundebolts in a video interview. The performer claims that the pleasure in Bucky’s journey in Thunderbolts is in how he changes when he is paired with a bunch of outlaws who may share certain characteristics with him. See the complete quotation below:
“He is always evolving. Like the rest of us, I guess. And that is kind of the fun with him now in this new film, because he is surrounded by a very degenerate crew of antagonists. They are not entirely different from him, I guess, in some ways.”
Stan notes that Bucky won’t be wholly unique from the other Thunderbolts players. But the actor also notes that since the character is joining a bunch of complex characters from various MCU eras, he won’t be quite on the same playing field as the others. Bucky’s involvement in the next MCU film is set to be significant, according to Stan, who states that part of the former Winter Soldier’s job description is “somehow finding a way to unite them.” Bucky has been suggested for a role similar to that in Thunderbolts before. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said in February 2023 that Bucky Barnes will serve as the Thunderbolts’ commander. Feige claims that the Thunderbolts “are barely heroes” and that Bucky serves as their “de facto leader.” Stan’s remarks highlight the fact that Bucky will need to adjust to his new job by attempting to establish a rapport with individuals who may be going through a phase of life that Bucky once experienced and wishes he had never gone through.
Notwithstanding the fact that Feige and Stan’s remarks suggest that Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is the one organizing the unit, Bucky Barnes ought to be the Thunderbolts’ field commander. He is, in my opinion, the ideal candidate for the part. Stan stated that he is not all that different from the other members of the team because he has gone through similar trauma, acts of violence, and feelings of rage. But Bucky’s life is in a lot better position now, and I’m looking forward to seeing how he can assist the Thunderbolts in making that same progress.
