Sebastian Stan, star of Thunderbolts, recently discussed Avengers: Doomsday, mentioning Robert Downey Jr.’s comeback as Doctor Doom and Stan’s own expectations for his character Bucky. Stan will appear in the next slate of Marvel films sooner rather than later, with Bucky making a comeback in Thunderbolts in 2025. Stan is extending his lengthy tenure as a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which started in 2011 with Captain America: The First Avengers, by joining the Thunderbolts ensemble cast. With Avengers: Doomsday approaching, Stan’s focus is now on ventures other than his upcoming confirmed cameo. For his next non-MCU movie The Apprentice, Stan spoke with GQ about Avengers: Doomsday and, in particular, about Robert Downey Jr.’s comeback. Stan and RDJ have shared the MCU screen several times, with Stan portraying Tony Stark/Iron Man and RDJ playing Bucky Barnes, respectively.
“I hope I’m in a scene with him. Is there any other guy that could pull that off? I don’t know, probably not. After Tropic Thunder, is there anything that guy can’t do?”
According to Stan, RDJ is making a comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the evil Doctor Doom, rather than as Iron Man. Fans of the MCU are not the only ones who find this significant; Stan, for example, expressed his wish to work with RDJ’s Doom in a scene and expressed gratitude to his former and maybe future co-star. Stan believes Bucky will be able to observe firsthand in-universe RDJ’s transformation from main MCU hero to one of the franchise’s major antagonists, as evidenced by Stan’s remarks that “there is nothing RDJ cannot do.”
Stan’s admiration for RDJ and his general joy at the actor’s MCU comeback are admirable, but his remarks raise more intriguing questions about the franchise’s potential. Stan stated that he hopes to have a moment with Doctor Doom played by RDJ, which seems to be a hint to Bucky’s involvement in the plot of Avengers: Doomsday. Apart from Downey Jr., the only confirmed cast members for Avengers 5 so far are Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. More announcements are probably in store for 2025. Nevertheless, Stan has essentially stated that Bucky would be in Avengers 5. The actor’s remarks don’t appear to indicate that he is hoping to be in the film, and Stan doesn’t make the customary admission in interviews with Marvel actors that he hasn’t spoken to them about the Avengers films. Therefore, Bucky’s dream that Stan had for him in relation to Avengers 5 may indicate that the former Winter Soldier is involved in the Multiverse Saga’s development in addition to the captivating tale of Thunderbolts.
Even if the return of RDJ and the Russo Brothers will probably make me less excited for Avengers 5, Stan’s remarks have given me newfound optimism for the film that I had previously managed to overlook. Stan’s expectations for Bucky’s part in the movie highlight the fact that RDJ’s Iron Man will face off against a number of previous Marvel Cinematic Universe stars. Stan’s remarks, in my opinion, put things into perspective. A lot of people have made jokes about how this would effect characters like Spider-Man through online memes.
“The impact of someone who looks like Tony Stark being a multiverse-threatening villain will drastically recontextualize Tony Stark’s legacy, presented through the eyes of those who knew him…“
It is not only individuals that were directly tied to Iron Man that will be taken aback by Doom’s entrance but just about every entity in the MCU. When a villain who resembles Tony Stark turns out to be a genuine danger, it will fundamentally alter the way that Bucky and other people who knew him remember him and his legacy. This raises a number of questions about how Avengers: Doomsday will address Iron Man’s legacy, but it also gives me and a lot of other fans a lot to look forward to in terms of the character relationships in the movie.
