Secret Invasion breaks Rotten Tomatoes record for MCU Disney+ shows

Rather of catching the interest and fascination of Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, Secret Invasion establishes an awful record when the six-episode miniseries’ conclusion receives all-time low ratings. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Episode 6, “Home,” has the lowest average critical rating for an MCU series on Disney+, with only 11% on the review aggregation website. Many critics labelled Secret Invasion as a waste of time and of the show’s key character, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, while “Home” was panned for its lack of passion and meaningful language. The last episode revealed probably the MCU’s most powerful superhero and had a lethal final battle with the monstrous Gravik, but it wasn’t enough to keep the programme from ending with a thud.

Secret Invasion’s accolades don’t end there: the miniseries has a 57% overall average critical rating and a 61% audience score, the latter of which is also the lowest for an MCU show. Furthermore, all of Secret Invasion’s episodes rank in the top four lowest critical scores for individual episodes in Disney+ MCU programmes, with Episode 1, “Resurrection,” scoring the highest at 51%. Secret Invasion is the first Phase Five MCU series, based on the comic crossover event of the same name, and stars Jackson as ex-S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury. Many critics and fans, however, remarked on how far Secret Invasion deviated from its comic book source material, with Marvel director Ali Selim revealing that the company instructed him not to study the comics when he was given the opportunity to make the film. Audiences also chastised Secret Invasion for using AI-generated opening titles, and there were concerns about the show’s speed and storyline twists.

Jackson executive produced and co-starred with Ben Mendelsohn (Talos), Emilia Clarke (G’iah), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Kingsley Ben-Adir (Gravik), and Olivia Colman (Sonya Falsworth) in the programme. As he endeavoured to rally the soldiers against the Skrull invasion of Earth, the programme provided a more in-depth look at Fury’s personal life, as well as his issues with ageing and the sad events of the past two Avengers films, Infinity War and Endgame. The episode saw a radicalised gang lead by Gravik taking the characteristics of high-ranking persons in order to get revenge on Fury for supposedly violating his commitment to establish a new home for the shapeshifting extraterrestrial race. Though the events of Secret Invasion foreshadowed The Marvels, the much anticipated sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, the miniseries lacked a post-credits sequence. This is only the second MCU production to lack a stinger, with Avengers: Endgame being the first to do so.
