In addition to eleven essays detailing the history of Moon Knight comic books, the collection also includes two interviews with prominent Moon Knight authors and a preface by famed Moon Knight artist David Finch (one of his works serves as this article’s header). Legendary Moon Knight artist Bill Sienkiewicz is featured in the first, while Marc Spector is the man behind the scenes as Moon Knight writer Chuck Dixon, who has one of the longest tenures in the character’s history (current Moon Knight writer Jed MacKay is already among the longest-tenured Moon Knight writers).

The first piece in the book is “Phases of Moon Knight: A Glimpse at a Character’s Improvisational History” by Jason D. DeHart, which provides a summary of the various personas Moon Knight has played throughout the Marvel Universe. The next piece is Zack Katz’s “The God on Your Shoulder,” which focuses on the tense connection that exists between Moon Knight and Khonshu, the deity who has played a significant role in Moon Knight’s past throughout the years (in both positive and negative ways).

Leyna Vincent of the Douglas J. Vincent System looks at how dissociative identity disorder has been portrayed in Moon Knight comics over time in an especially interesting work titled “We Are Moon Knight.” In “The One You See Coming: The Art Rebirths of Moon Knight,” Jonathan Sapsed explores the ways that the character has been shaped by Moon Knight’s artists over the years, particularly Declan Shalvey and Bill Sienkiewicz. In his insightful essay “The Spector at Work: Moon Knight as a Metaphor for the Workplace,” Emmet O’Cuana examines Moon Knight through the prism of the modern workplace. O’Cuana draws parallels between Moon Knight’s attempt to navigate the modern reality of employment and work while wearing multiple hats and his own attempt to do the same with his superhero career.
