Simu Liu, the lead in Shang-Chi 2, has provided an intriguing release update and hinted at the upcoming of the much awaited sequel. The president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, previously announced that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: Part 2 will be released in September 2021. Although a prior rumour suggested a February 14, 2025 premiere, it is challenging to determine the precise release window because to the continually changing Marvel release dates. However, the addition of Shang-Chi 2 to Marvel Studios’ official production schedule implies that work on the follow-up may soon begin.
During an encounter on Threads, a fan asked about the status of Shang-Chi 2, to which Simu Liu answered by saying that he had been assured it will appear after an Avengers movie, likely The Kang Dynasty. Liu voiced anger about the film’s delays, which are beyond his control. This information matches with the release date of Avengers 5 on May 1, 2026, indicating that Marvel Studios is now planning a release for Shang-Chi 2 sometime after May 2026. However, if Liu was talking to Avengers: Secret Wars, then the sequel might not air until beyond May 2027 according to Disney’s current timeline.
Simu Liu’s update shows hope for the future of Shang-Chi 2. It allows fans to modify their expectations around the release window for the sequel. The involvement of Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and the Wonder Man Disney+ series may be a contributing cause to the delays in Shang-Chi 2’s development. Cretton’s commitments to these projects could prioritize them above the sequel. If Shang-Chi 2 does debut after Avengers 5 in 2026, production might theoretically begin in 2025. However, if Cretton requires a longer vacation, the premiere may be pushed back further, perhaps coinciding with Avengers 6 and marking a shift away from the Multiverse Saga.
