Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra has expressed his disappointment with the performance of “Kraven the Hunter,” describing it as the worst launch since he became CEO in 2017. Despite the poor box office performance, Vinciquerra insists that the film is not bad. “Kraven the Hunter” grossed a mere $11 million in its opening weekend and has only managed to accumulate $18 million in North American ticket sales and $43 million globally, making it one of the lowest-performing Marvel-related films from Sony. Vinciquerra attributes the film’s failure to negative media coverage, suggesting that media critics have unfairly targeted Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) films, including “Kraven the Hunter” and “Madame Web”.
Vinciquerra’s defense of “Kraven the Hunter” is part of a broader critique of media influence on film success. He argues that media criticism has disproportionately affected the performance of SSU films, similar to how “Venom” initially faced negative reviews but ultimately succeeded due to audience support. He believes that media bias has hindered the potential success of these films, stating, “They are not terrible films”. However, some media outlets, like “The Escapist,” have countered this narrative by suggesting that the success of “Madame Web” on Netflix might be due to audience curiosity rather than film quality, and that “Venom’s” success is more attributable to the character’s popularity rather than media influence.
The poor performance of “Kraven the Hunter” has led to significant repercussions for Sony’s future plans. The film’s failure, coupled with the underperformance of other SSU films like “Morbius” and “Madame Web,” has prompted Sony to reconsider its strategy for expanding the Spider-Man Universe. Vinciquerra acknowledges that the negative reception and financial losses have made it challenging to continue producing these films, stating, “It’s like being bitten by a snake. If we put out another one, no matter how good it is, it will be destroyed”. As a result, Sony is expected to be more cautious in selecting which characters from the Spider-Man Universe will be developed into future films, focusing on those with the highest potential for success.
