There are rumours that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse won’t be Sony Pictures’ final animated Marvel film. Sony is reportedly working on at least two additional animated Spider-Man films, one of which will centre on the Wall-Crawler’s rogues gallery and the other on a female lead. The female Spider-Man film is reportedly unrelated to the previously disclosed Spider-Woman project, which was initially revealed by Sony back in 2018, despite the lack of information. Prior to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’s November 2018 debut, Sony Pictures Animation revealed plans for a female-led spinoff film and a follow-up (which would eventually become Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in 2023). Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal stated at the time that the project will mostly centre on Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman while also introducing Silk and Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, even though not much else has been disclosed since it was first announced. The screenplay was to be written by Bek Smith, and Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One) planned to direct.

The Spider-Verse trilogy, starring Miles Morales as Spider-Man, will come to an end with Beyond the Spider-Verse, which Sony Pictures Animation is now hard at work on. Recently, questions concerning a potential fourth episode of the animated series were posed to Shameik Moore, who plays Miles in the series. Moore said that he would “be there” if a fourth film was announced, even though he acknowledged that he had no idea what the future of the franchise contained. Pascal stated that Miles Morales wouldn’t likely make his live-action debut until after Beyond the Spider-Verse and the impending Spider-Man 4 starring Tom Holland. Richtman claims that Sony and Marvel have talked about bringing Miles Morales into Holland’s Spider-Man 4, however specifics about his involvement are yet unknown. It is anticipated that Peter Parker from Holland would rejoin Spider-Man 4 at some point following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.

With a combined global box office receipt of over $1 billion, Sony Pictures’ two Spider-Man films, Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse, were both huge commercial triumphs. On Rotten Tomatoes, a website that aggregates reviews, both Spider-Verse installments are certified fresh, indicating that the franchise has also garnered positive reviews from critics. As the only non-Disney/Pixar picture to win the Best Animated Feature picture Oscar, Into the Spider-Verse took home the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, and Oscar in that order. In addition, this year’s Across the Spider-Verse has been nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, which are scheduled for March 10.
