With the formal removal of its final Marvel project, Sony appears to have put an end to its Spider-Man Universe. Venom marked the start of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe in 2018, and it has since expanded to include five additional Marvel films: Morbius, Madame Web, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Venom: The Last Dance, and Kraven the Hunter. Sony intended to add at least two more movies to this thriving franchise: Hypno Hustler, starring Donald Glover, and El Muerto, starring Bad Bunny. These two films have been scrapped, though. The domestic release schedule has been formally modified by Sony Pictures. Sony and Blumhouse’s unnamed Insidious project has been postponed by a full year, to August 21, 2026; Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing has been rescheduled for August 29, 2025; and Sony’s untitled Marvel movie, which was initially scheduled for June 27, 2025, has been dropped from the studio’s schedule. There are currently no more information available regarding Sony’s sole surviving Marvel film.
Just six months after its cancellation was revealed, Sony’s untitled Marvel film was first slated for release on June 27, 2025. Even before Kraven the Hunter’s dismal box office performance highlighted the franchise’s disappointing outcomes, this movie was on the verge of cancellation. With no official cast, director, or writers committed, Sony’s shelved Marvel movie would have required a minimum one-year wait if it had proceeded with development. Since El Muerto and Hypno Hustler were both placed on indefinite hold more than a year ago, it seems likely that this film was not one of those films. A Silver Sable and a Jackpot film and a Silk: Spider Society television series in association with Amazon Studios were among the other Sony projects in different phases of early production. These initiatives have all been canceled, it’s safe to assume. Sony is still working on at least three Marvel projects, albeit none of them are related to the MCU’s Spider-Man 4, the standalone Spider-Noir series starring Nicolas Cage, or Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Additionally, Sony and Marvel Studios will keep working together on Spider-Man’s MCU appearances.
After Venom’s triumph, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe started to highlight its flaws. Madame Web took a similar tack, but Morbius did not connect with either Marvel fans or the broader public. The majority of critics emphasized the franchise’s dearth of innovative stories, and the SSU’s box office showed a significant drop. Sadly, despite the popularity of the original work and the skill of the actors portraying them, Sony’s Marvel characters failed to capture the public’s attention. Despite not being a worse film than its predecessors, Kraven the Hunter’s box office performance demonstrated how uneasy viewers were with the franchise. Right now, ending Sony’s Spider-Man Universe could be the best course of action.
