Sony’s ambitious attempt to enter the Marvel universe with “Madame Web” has proven to be a huge letdown, causing the company to abandon its ambitions for a new film series. One of the worst beginnings in Hollywood history for a Marvel character-based movie, the movie garnered harsh reviews from critics and a dismal 13 percent on Rotten Tomatoes despite attempts to highlight Marvel Comics ladies that were underrepresented on screen. With just $26.2 million made domestically in the first six days and a subpar CinemaScore grade of C+, the box office result was as appalling. Sony is now in a similar situation as DC and Marvel as a result of this failure, which has forced the studio to reconsider how it approaches comic book movies.
The failure of “Madame Web” affects not just the movie but also the ideas for a possible new franchise starring Dakota Johnson. In addition to introducing supporting cast members, the movie established a possible future in which Johnson’s Cassie Webb might lead them to create a team of Spider-Women. But the dark atmosphere in the studio suggests that this vision will never come to pass. The superhero genre is struggling; live-action comic book films from the previous year did poorly, and “superhero fatigue” is becoming a recognised term in the business. “Madame Web” tried a different strategy, focusing on female viewers and taking a grounded suspense thriller approach, but it didn’t work.
The unsatisfactory result has prompted concerns about the direction superhero films would take going forward as well as the continuous change in the business. The prevailing pattern points to a possible change towards fewer films with larger companies. Sony wants to make big hits, but it’s also not afraid to take chances. It may change the story of the studio’s next Spider-Man Universe film “Kraven,” so it’s too soon to tell how things will turn out. Still, “Madame Web’s” fall is a harsh reminder that, in the cutthroat world of superhero movies, forgetfulness may sometimes be more unforgettable than success.
