Rumour has it that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios disagree on the direction to take Tom Holland’s Spider-Man after the box office triumph of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. Insider Daniel Richtman claims that Sony plans to create another “huge” multiverse adventure for Spider-Man 4 in an attempt to relive some of the box office success that No Way Home brought. Reportedly, the studio also intends to reunite Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Mans for a second crossover including Holland’s Wall-Crawler. But Holland and Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, are keen for Spider-Man 4 to “be more grounded,” akin to the previous two films in Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy. Richtman also notes that although Vincent D’Onofrio has not yet started negotiations to return to the role, Wilson Fisk/Kingpin is scheduled to make an appearance in Spider-Man 4.This is consistent with D’Onofrio’s previous remarks, in which he stated that he has not yet received a request from Marvel to star in an Avengers or Spider-Man 4 film.”I believe that will occur if the ruling class desires it to, you know? The actor stated earlier this month, “I don’t think there has been any speculation that it’s not going to happen. “Well, it seems like the right course for us to take, but who knows? You know, sometimes you get calls saying, “Oh, we’re doing this now.” I’m thinking, “Oh, right.” That’s how it is, you know.”
In order to safeguard the multiverse, Doctor Strange erased everyone’s memory of Peter Parker at the conclusion of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Following this significant shift, viewers watched Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe become more like the Spider-Man he read in comic books—living in a modest flat and making his own comic-accurate Spider-Man suit—having no one, or corporation (Stark Industries), to turn to. In the closing scenes of the movie, Peter returned to his vigilantism as the amiable Wall-Crawler from the neighbourhood, which many fans took as a hint towards a more realistic Spider-Man 4 set in New York City. Fans of Spider-Man nearly saw Holland return to the character in Sony’s Madame Web this year. There were intentions for Holland’s Spider-Man to make an appearance in Madame Web, according to Insider Jeff Sneider, but during reshoots, any mention of the character was taken out. Sony had also abandoned plans for Garfield to make a Spider-Man appearance prior to Holland. The fourth entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe series, Madame Web, is the first to include the Wall-Crawler in a major role.
