Justin Thompson, who is also co-directing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, has expounded on the enormous number of Spider-People that appear in the much awaited sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

In a recent interview with Collider, Thompson increased Chris Miller’s earlier estimate of 240 Spider-People to an approximate total of 280 in Across the Spider-Verse. In addition, even after omitting nameless characters, the total is barely under 100. The precise figure? Oh my, we added right up until the very end,” Thompson remarked. “Honestly, I’m going to be honest with you; we just completed the movie, like, two weeks ago, and I don’t believe I had time to stop and properly count the number of people in it. But the last time I peeked in, I believe it was about 280. Just to be clear, that doesn’t always mean particular, distinctive characters that you could recognise; it might also refer to variances. However, if you’re just referring to identified characters, there are probably around 95.

2018’s Into the Spider-Verse featured a fair amount of spider-themed heroes — namely, Miles Morales/Spider-Man (Shameik Moore), Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld), Peter B. Parker/Spider-Man (Jake Johnson), Peter Porker/Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), Peni Parker/SP//dr (Kimiko Glenn), Peter Parker/Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Chris Pine) and Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). Even if it’s unlikely that Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir, or Peni Parker will make an appearance in Across the Spider-Verse, the impending sequel surely raises the stakes.

Spider-like characters including Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), Pavitr Prabhakar/Spider-Man India (Karan Soni), Hobart “Hobie” Brown/Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), and Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider (Andy Samberg) will be travelling with Miles, Gwen, Peter B., and Miguel on this new journey. In addition, several more Spider-Variants from the multiverse are revealed in the movie’s promotional materials, including Doppelganger, Otto Octavius/Superior Spider-Man, Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman, Mary Jane Watson-Parker/Spinneret, and Anna-May Parker/Spiderling, to mention a few. There are also a tonne of different variations of the original Spider-Man, Peter Parker, such as those from the animated series The Spectacular Spider-Man on the CW and Marvel’s Spider-Man on the PlayStation. Even a reference to Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker from the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be seen in the second official teaser for Across the Spider-Verse.
