By allowing Daniel Kaluuya to be himself, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse helped Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk become a cultural figure. In an interview on creating Spider-Punk’s dissident, anti-establishment demeanour, director Kemp Powers stated, “We were actually using audio clips of interviews with Daniel Kaluuya as we were doing visual development on the character.” Daniel Kaluuya’s natural speaking voice, Powers observed after seeing the videos, “was right in the pocket of that effortless cool we envisioned the Hobie character having from the beginning.” By chance, Camden Town, where London’s punk scene began in the 1970s, was where Kaluuya also grew up. The tale of Across the Spider-Verse originally didn’t include Spider-Punk as prominently, but as writer Chris Miller explains, “once we got to know Daniel, we rewrote the part so it became more necessary.” Hobie’s portrayal benefited much from Kaluuya’s improvised lines as well; Powers singles out the instance when Miles Morales notices Hobie remove his mask. He said, “At first there wasn’t discussion there. “How are you even cooler under the mask? That was actually a line of dialogue we came up with after seeing it in edit,”‘ the author said. Daniel was given that while we were recording, and we let him to improvise a lot. I was this cool the entire time, and other like statements, he began to make. That’s the one that stayed, though.
Although Miles’ Uncle Aaron (Mahershalla Ali) and Hobie Brown (of Marvel Comics) both first appeared as Earth 616’s Prowler in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Hobie Brown was later reintroduced as a Spider-variant in the original Spider-Verse comic. In addition to getting his own miniseries in 2022, Spider-Punk would also make appearances in the subsequent event books Spider-Geddon and End of the Spider-Verse. Along with Spider-Punk, Miguel O’Hara made a triumphant comeback in Across the Spider-Verse. Pavitr Prabhakar’s Spider-Man also made his screen debut, and Sun-Spider, Web-Slinger, and Spider-Rex also had brief appearances. Spider-Man from The Spectacular Spider-Man, Spider-Man from the Insomniac Games, and even Donald Glover’s live-action Prowler made non-comic cameos. Since its debut, “Across the Spider-Verse” has received a wide range of positive reviews and box office success, even ranking among the highest-grossing films of 2023 thus far. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, its sequel, is still being postponed indefinitely. The actors of Beyond the Spider-Verse reportedly couldn’t finish their recordings before the SAG-AFTRA started, leaving the movie unfinished until further notice. The only Spider-Verse celebrity reportedly aware of Beyond’s plot twist is Miles’ voice actor Shameik Moore, according to Karan Soni, who plays Pavitr.
