The story of Spider-Woman continues from the previous issue, with Jessica Drew battling the evil Green Mamba, who, tragically for both of them, turns out to be her father, Gerry Drew. As Gerry relates, he was captured by Hydra when Jessica was taken out of reality during the battle against the insectile Shathra. Hydra abducts the then-infantile Gerry and uses a programme that tracks young heroes—or villains—in waiting to put him through the same kind of accelerated development treatments that Jessica herself had decades before. Author Dennis Hallum and artist Javier Rodriguez debuted Gerry in 2016’s Spider-Woman. Jessica gave birth to Gerry during an exceptionally difficult labour that required an emergency C-section. Artificial insemination was used to conceive Gerry, who soon became Jessica’s primary focus and almost caused her to give up on the heroic lifestyle entirely. Rather than that, Jessica went back to being Spider-Woman so she could personally demonstrate to her kid what it means to be a hero.
Spider-Woman was briefly removed from the chronology in Dan Slott and Mark Bagley’s 2022 adaptation of Spider-Man. Jessica was cut free from the Web of existence and Destiny, which essentially charts every existence in the Multiverse, after being stabbed by an old, mysterious knife. Things have changed significantly since Jessica and the other victims of the similar fate were ultimately placed back in their rightful places within the Marvel Universe. Jessica had been looking for her lost kid, who practically no one else appeared to remember anything about, since almost the instant she re-emerged. Spider-Woman found that the continuing Gang War in Marvel Comics was the ideal way to let out her resentment and find out if there were any hints as to where her kid could have gone. Now that Hydra is well entrenched in their ranks, it has also been the ideal chance for him to torture Spider-Woman with that same son.
