Cobie Smulders, a recurring character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the star of the Secret Invasion, discusses how she knew her character’s outcome from the beginning. Smulders, who plays Maria Hill in the MCU, was questioned by Marvel about the moment she learnt of her character’s sad fate. “I have known. Smulders said, “I knew from the first call about it,” and then went on to describe what she thought the job was actually about. “In my opinion, it was a chance to raise the stakes right away. Everyone, including myself, found it unexpected, but I believe it adds a new dimension of reality. If this occurs, what will happen next?
Smulders continued by describing the help she received from the rest of the Secret Invasion cast and crew as well as the chance it gave her. “[The creative team] was always very upfront with me about it,” she remarked. “I was simply thrilled to go back and portray her again, as well as to work with Sam [Jackson] and the rest of this incredible group, again. What an absurd dream. It was a lovely endeavour, and I got to meet Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, and Ben Mendelsohn. Secret Invasion, which is loosely based on the 2007 comic book event of the same name, follows Nick Fury and the few allies he still has in the world as they battle the looming danger of an Earth-invading Skrull invasion. Jackson’s Nick Fury is primarily alone himself throughout the series despite the all-star ensemble cast, however this is more because of a lack of faith in the situation than an overt dislike of the MCU heroes. This version of the character, according to executive producer and director Ali Selim, is “a Nick Fury that we’ve never seen before and, so, that immediately demands a more grounded series.”
The MCU’s head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, has also commented on the tone of Secret Invasion, noting that the notion of a “darker, grittier spy show” was interesting given how infrequently the genre has been explored in the larger brand. Feige specifically referred to the chance it gave the production company to explore “the tone of a spy show” and to create a “very different dynamic between Fury and Talos than we had seen in our [1990s-set] buddy-action movie Captain Marvel.” In addition to murdering off beloved characters under a haze of ambiguity, Secret Invasion has drawn a lot of notice for its usage of AI in creating the opening credits sequence. Fans have criticised the move for a variety of reasons, although Selim justified it by saying that it was appropriate given the episode’s theme. “That was part of it when we reached out to the AI suppliers, you know? It just came straight out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity. That person, who? This is who?
