Storm confronts Genesis head to head for Arakko’s destiny

The literal mutant world of Arakko has also been devastated by the return of its former leader, Genesis, who has been using the Staff of Annihilation and her legion of warriors to retake control of Arakko (which is now the planet formerly known as Mars). The Fall of X has continued to wreak havoc on the X-Men’s world. X-Men Red features the dramatic battle between Storm and Genesis with the mutant island, Kaorak, that took place at the end of the previous issue. With a cover by Stefano Caselli and Jesus Aburtov, X-Men Red is a collaboration between writer Al Ewing, artist Yildiray Cinar, colorist Federico Blee, and letterer Ariana Maher (with designs, as always, by Tom Muller). The story follows the dramatic events of the war for Arakko in previous issues, where Storm was given the choice to turn to the power Eternal, Uranos, who would have destroyed all of Genesis’ forces. However, Storm chose not to carry out genocide in order to win a war, even if it meant losing her soul. Genesis’ children have since turned against one another, with Death joining Storm’s army after his sister Pestilence violated their code and attacked Storm when Death was in a one-on-one confrontation with her. After Richard Rider, Nova, put Storm in a coma by defending him from Pestilence’s attack, Death killed his sister and sided with Storm against his mother, Genesis.

Then, En Sabah Nur showed up on Arakko. Although he was unable to face his wife, Genesis, face-to-face, he did bring a group of formidable mutants to support Storm after using magic to bring to life the enormous island known as Kaorak. Genesis was then confronted by Storm holding Kaorak, who instructed her to pick her own island to battle. As evidenced by the preview pages, Genesis has responded to Karoak’s arrival by deploying her own island defence force. When Genesis’ powers attack, En Sabah Nur and the other mutants fight to control Karoak. Then, Storm deflects Genesis’s first blow and exclaims that it’s her turn now. She is made fun of by Genesis for acting like a game, but she will let Storm decide how to proceed anyway. What transpires in this titanic battle will have to wait until next week’s X-Men Red!
