Teyonah Parris, star of The Marvels, talked candidly about how the news that she had been chosen to play Monica Rambeau in the MCU first affected her emotionally. Parris spoke about how it was to see her face on storyboards and previsualizations in addition to getting cast in the part in an interview: “It was just so overwhelming that I remember falling into tears in that room in front of some of the Marvel Studios execs… I was thinking of my parents, their support and affection, and the difficult times when you might not have money and book anything for a year and a half. I was simply experiencing the love and support of so many individuals who helped me get to this point. Being a superhero from Marvel was my real dream, and now I’m here. I believe it was also the realisation that we don’t frequently get to experience that as black women or women of colour in this superhero realm.” Parris was first cast for WandaVision, the inaugural series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; nevertheless, the roots for her role to be the main attraction of The Marvels were sown in that brief run of episodes.

Regretfully for Marvel Studios, viewers don’t seem to be as enthused by The Marvels as they were with Parris’ initial installment in the series. The most recent MCU movie made a meagre $47 million domestically on its first weekend of release, creating an unfavourable record for the series that is the lowest in its fifteen-year existence. Based on estimates, the movie was expected to make around $75 million over its opening weekend—a figure that Marvel and Disney were apparently not happy with. Even still, not as many people as for previous MCU films have shown up at the theatre, but those who have appear to be happy with the film. Rotten Tomatoes gives The Marvels an audience score of 84% right now, and the most recent installment of the series has received some favourable reviews from viewers. With a 62% rating in that area on the same website, critics seem to be less convinced about the movie. Even yet, Teyonah Parris, Brie Larson, and Iman Vellani—the core trio of heroes—have garnered praise from both reviewers and spectators for their outstanding performances.
