Sam Wilson’s Phase 5 film could not be a hit even when Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World surpasses three previous MCU solo films at the domestic box office, marking another milestone. Adamantium’s announcement and President Ross’ public transformation into the Red Hulk were two of the major MCU events that took place in Captain America: Brave New World, the first live-action film in Marvel Studios’ 2025 schedule. Though it gradually breaks new records a month after its theatrical debut, Captain America: Brave New World has failed to make any headway at the box office despite its amazing idea. With a domestic total of $185,396,912 as of March 17, 2025, Captain America: Brave New World has officially surpassed Ant-Man’s $180.2 million, Thor’s $181 million, and Black Widow’s $183.6 million. However, Thor’s $268.2 million and Ant-Man’s $339.1 million still far outpace Captain America: Brave New World’s $203.2 million on a global scale. With its global box office receipts, Captain America: Brave New World ranks sixth in the MCU’s rankings.

If Captain America: Brave New World gains enough traction, it may surpass the American box office receipts of four earlier films. To match Doctor Strange’s $232.6 million domestic box office, Captain America: Brave New World has to make $47 million. By that time, it will have gone by. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Thor: The Dark World, and Ant-Man and the Wasp. Following Doctor Strange, Captain America: Brave New World will require over $52 million to reach Iron Man and an additional $27 million domestically to reach Captain America: The Winter Soldier. With a global box office total of $389 million, Captain America: Brave New World is poised to overtake Eternals’ $401 million. However, with Captain America: Brave New World’s revenues continuing to decline, it appears more difficult to achieve Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s $476 million, Thor’s $449.3 million, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ $432.2 million. Reaching Ant-Man’s $518.8 million any time soon now appears to be out of the question.

At the box office, Captain America: Brave New World is losing steam. Captain America: Brave New World is still ranked fifth in the MCU’s box office rankings and third in the MCU’s Rotten Tomatoes rankings, despite not getting as much negative feedback as Eternals, The Marvels, Secret Invasion, and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. On the basis of momentum alone, Captain America: Brave New World would have had a far better reception from both reviewers and viewers if it had been released during the Infinity Saga. While upcoming films such as Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Avengers: Doomsday are unlikely to achieve comparable success, they will undoubtedly face significant obstacles in the wake of Captain America: Brave New World’s dismal showing.
