The director of this year’s The Marvels and the 2021 Candyman feature, Nia DaCosta, was not invited to the cast and crew screening of her own Marvel film. DaCosta reportedly didn’t know that the cast and crew of The Marvels were screening that night, which also happened to be her 34th birthday celebration. When crew members were invited to DaCosta’s birthday celebration, they let the director know about it, but it was too late for them to make it. On November 8, Mary Livanos, the executive producer of The Marvels, took DaCosta’s place at the Fox Village Theatre in Westwood.
A DaCosta spokeswoman told THR that it would be “quite disrespectful and upsetting to suggest Nia has anything other than adoration for her creative team.” It’s also important to note that DaCosta spent the evening before to the cast and crew screening in Las Vegas at a much subdued version of the same event. The cast of the movie, including Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), was also unable to attend since they had to wait until the SAG-AFTRA strike ended at 12:01 a.m. to continue promoting the movie.
The Marvels’ box office failure is still very much a mystery at this time. In its second weekend at the box office, the $200 million film had a 78-80% decline in box office receipts—a regrettable record for Marvel Studios. This follows the Captain Marvel sequel’s lacklustre premiere and mixed to negative reviews. Marvel fans are understandably unhappy with The Marvels, but they are also aware that there appears to be a strange drive to place the blame for the movie’s low box office result on the indie filmmaker rather than on Marvel or Disney. It wasn’t until recently that an insider attempted to hold DaCosta accountable for allegedly “abandoning” The Marvels during the postproduction stage, even though the director had already neglected other commitments to prioritise the movie.
