Avengers: Infinity War was undoubtedly one of the biggest cinematic events of recent years, bringing together the most popular heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in an epic showdown against the mighty Thanos. However, a recent revelation from Jim Starlin, the creator of Thanos, has shed light on an important sequence that didn’t make the final cut.

In Infinity War, Thanos’ main mission was to collect all six Infinity Stones while the Avengers tried to stop him. The film showed the Mad Titan already in possession of the Power Stone, but it didn’t reveal how he obtained it. The scrapped sequence would have shown an epic clash between Thanos and the Nova Corps on Xandar for the Power Stone.

In an interview with Near Mint Condition, Jim Starlin revealed that he had been sworn to secrecy about the details of the two Avengers movies by screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely for a year and a half. Starlin shared that he had been on set and had seen all the concept paintings, but he couldn’t reveal anything until the movies were released. One month before Infinity War premiered, Starlin received an email from director Joe Russo stating that the 45-minute sequence of Thanos obtaining the first Infinity Stone had been cut from the movie.

According to Starlin, the sequence was cut because the studio didn’t want to spend money on the visual effects, and they didn’t want the movie to be as long as Avengers: Endgame. While it is unknown if the sequence was actually 45 minutes long, it’s clear that the scene was intended to be a significant part of the film’s opening.

Starlin also confirmed that Marvel had planned to include the lengthy sequence on the DVD release, but it never happened. When asked if he would like to see a director’s cut, Starlin agreed, expressing his wish that Marvel would consider releasing one.

The removal of the Thanos sequence is unfortunate, as it would have been exciting to witness the full might of the MCU villain right at the beginning of the movie. However, given that the sequence was shot, it’s possible that it exists somewhere in the archives. Fans have speculated that the scene could be included in a future Nova project, which is rumored to be in development, or in an extended edition of the movie.

Overall, the revelation of the removed Thanos sequence is a fascinating insight into the process of creating a blockbuster movie like Avengers: Infinity War. While fans may never get to see the scene in its entirety, it’s exciting to imagine what might have been and how it could have changed the film’s opening.
