Dario Scardapane, the showrunner of Daredevil: Born Again, recently shared his opinions regarding the Netflix series Daredevil. The author wrote for The Punisher, the show’s sibling series, although he did not work on that one. He pointed out the distinctions between the current Disney version and those works. Despite the fact that Daredevil: Born Again and the Netflix series have the same cast and chronology, Scardapane told SFX that the new series is significantly different from the others: “There is more fun in the moments with these characters and a lot less navel-gazing than before.” “The earlier show, at its best, was fantastic,” Scardapane added, but “at its worst, it was two characters in a room talking about what a hero is.” He clarified that although he was “not taking swipes,” he “just wanted to see characters doing things; he didn’t want to hear them moping about their lot in life.” He further demonstrated his thesis by drawing on his experience on The Punisher:
“Longer sequences were one of our directives for The Punisher. In order to create space between these intense action moments, you created these lengthy five-page passages where characters were arguing. We can now perform large action scenes much more quickly because of how things have changed since then.“
“I really feel that Netflix’s Daredevil, which I know in my blood, was much more noir, and this show is more New York crime story,” Scardapane added, delving into the tonal differences between the two shows. He compared the show to The Sopranos, saying it had a “feeling” of “classic 90s crime tales.” According to Scardapane, the Disney+ series “has a pace and a scope that, for a lot of reasons, Netflix wasn’t able to do.” Despite being “very dark, cinematically,” Daredevil wasn’t “necessarily story-wise,” and Daredevil: Born Again is “much darker.”
At the time Scardapane took over, Daredevil: Born Again was in a state of turmoil. Prior to Marvel deciding to recast the program and change the creative team, the project was initially intended to be more of a courtroom drama. “A Herculean task,” as series lead Charlie Cox described the transformation, was ultimately more “in line with what Daredevil had been established to be.” According to the actor’s and writer’s statements, Daredevil: Born Again sought to find a balance between carrying on the tradition and going in a different direction. According to Scardapane’s analysis of Netflix’s Daredevil, his goal for Daredevil: Born Again is to take the greatest aspects of the series and make them even better. Even though the Netflix series was a fan favorite, Daredevil: Born Again could expand on the strong foundation it established with a more action-packed Daredevil.
