Wanda Maximoff’s evil doppelganger will return in Marvel Comics’ Scarlet Witch, out in August. Wanda’s demonic version, Lore, made her debut in 1994’s Scarlet Witch limited series. Steve Orlando’s Scarlet Witch returns in June, with the third issue illustrated by Jacopo Campagni (X-Men Red) and Russell Dauterman. According to Marvel, the book continues to test Wanda’s power as she takes on the role of the Marvel Universe’s primary defender against both ancient and new dangerous supernatural dangers, including Lore. Marvel debuted Dauterman’s Scarlet Witch cover and the original Lore design sheet. The third issue of Marvel’s Scarlet Witch is titled “Lore Returns!” Scarlet Witch’s quest to reach the world of the living brings her face-to-face with her necromantic Multiverse counterpart! Lore will not rest until her murder at Wanda’s hands is avenged—but another of Wanda’s adversaries may hold the secret to her survival!” Lore destroyed her own world before attempting to conquer the Multiverse and embodies Wanda’s biggest fear: a version of herself gone insane with power. Scarlet Witch may have to embrace her inherent darkness to fight Lore.
Dauterman described his Lore design and how it differed from Wanda’s. “Redesigning Lore was a huge treat,” that’s what he remarked. “Lore is an evil Wanda version, so I wanted to contrast the design I created for our Scarlet Witch, which was supposed to be wonderful, vivid, and super-heroic, by going dark and ominous with a goth, zombie atmosphere. “I’m very excited to be drawing some interiors in the issue where these two Wandas face off,” Dauterman continued. Wanda’s possible comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a hot source of debate since the publication of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in which she appears to die during a climactic fight at Mount Wundagore. An extract from The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline shows that the Scarlet Witch perished while attempting to save her universe from annihilation. “Wanda destroys Wundagore – and collapses it upon herself – ending two great threats to all of the Multiverse,” according to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) comic book. Wanda star Elizabeth Olsen has never ruled out returning to the franchise, and Marvel Studios is apparently interested in developing a Scarlet Witch film.
