Julius Onah, the director of Captain America: Brave New World, recently discussed how the addition of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk influenced the film’s overall theme. After the untimely death of William Hurt, who had been Thunderbolt Ross since 2008, the part will now be performed by the renowned actor Harrison Ford. Most recently, this version of the figure was elected President of the United States. Consistent with his previous roles, he will oppose Anthony Mackie’s character as Captain America and Danny Ramirez’s character as Joaquin Torres/Falcon.
Onah discussed the Red Hulk’s appearance in Captain America: Brave New World and his connection to the movie’s central themes in an interview with Fandango’s Big Ticket series. When “Red Hulk first became a possibility in this film,” the filmmaker said, he “was smiling like a kid.” Excited, he “knew this was the right idea and the right moment to put him out there in the world.” “Having an actor like Harrison Ford play Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, knowing that he’s going to have scenes with Anthony Mackie,” Onah remarked, expressing his excitement at the casting of Ross. Onah went on to say: “The Hulk character is such an expression of pure id, but there’s something about, especially a rage Hulk, that is so relatable and exciting for an audience, but there’s also a real thematic core when it comes to the expression of that anger in this film, and what it means about the conflict at the center of this film.” He continued by stating that “it’s not just like the inner kid in him that’s excited about it, but the director or the storyteller in him is also excited about where this goes, and thematically what this film has to say.” Captain America: Brave New World’s message, according to Onah, makes for “a really exciting Captain America film.” “Sitting side by side with everything that Mackie and Ramirez have been a part of in the past,” the director further hinted, the movie “is going to be a real treat for audiences.”
Onah’s excitement over Red Hulk’s role in Captain America: Brave New World’s message shows that he has a strong idea of what he wants the movie to be. The filmmaker also understands the emotional nature of the Hulk and Red Hulk characters, as well as how they lack the inhibitions of their human counterparts. For a hero like Sam, who is new to the Captain America position, Ross’s icy and frequently cunning demeanor will make for an intriguing antagonist. When Captain America: Brave New World opens in cinemas in February, fans can expect an exciting experience if Onah’s enthusiasm is any indication. It will be intriguing to see Red Hulk highlight a new side of the politician, especially because Ross has long been a nonphysical menace in the MCU. Ford is also a superb actor with a wide range of genre experience. Ford has the potential to become a memorable enemy for Captain America, adding a long list of strong MCU antagonists for the Star-Spangled Man, even though the late Hurt will be missed in the role.
