In Captain America: Brave New World, director Julius Onah talks about the special abilities of the Red Hulk and hints at how the MCU antagonist would vary from Mark Ruffalo’s original Hulk. Given that it has been building for seventeen years, President Ross’s metamorphosis into the Red Hulk is a major selling point of Captain America: Brave New World. Bruce Banner was hounded by Thaddeus Ross, who attempted to build his own Gamma-fueled Super Soldier using the Hulk’s abilities but failed. Ross himself will experience gamma radiation nearly two decades later. Seven years after the original ferocious Hulk’s final on-screen appearance, director Julius Onah responded to ScreenRant’s interview with Captain America star Anthony Mackie at the Captain America: Brave New World press junket on whether the arrival of Red Hulk will elevate the standard for the MCU’s Hulks. Using “heat waves” and “flames,” Onah emphasizes Thaddeus Ross’s emotional journey and the uniqueness of Red Hulk’s abilities. See Onah’s complete remarks below:
Absolutely. What’s so great about the Hulk and the creation of this character from publishing is he’s this expression of it pure, unadulterated rage. And I say it’s relatable because we’ve all had those moments where we just want to get angry and we hold it in. Well, Hulk gets to let it out. And because it’s part of Ross’s emotional journey in this film, not only was it something that was meaningful, but it’s also something that then still is fun and action-driven. So you’re getting two levels of it, the escapism of it, but it’s still something that is emotional and character-driven and part of the theme of this film. So Red Hulk is very special in this film, and we get to lean into what’s unique about him, his heat. We get to see the heat waves around him, we get to see flames. I don’t want to spoil too much, but it is so, so exciting and I’m still pinching myself that I got to do this. And especially with Harrison Ford bringing Red Hulk to life. It’s a real treat.
The teasers for Captain America: Brave New World hinted that Red Hulk might be able to radiate heat through his skin. In the comics, Red Hulk’s inherent gamma radiation output rises in direct proportion to his level of rage. Ross’s body may catch fire from his gamma radiation, and he can use the heat to intensify his strikes. Additionally, Red Hulk can absorb gamma rays and intensify his heat output. Although Red Hulk’s strength doesn’t improve as much as Hulk’s, he has an advantage over Hulk due to his heat-related skills. Bruce Banner, played by Mark Ruffalo, now maintains his Smart Hulk form, which he may discard at any time by using a unique inhibitor that enables him to transform back into a human. Red Hulk would most likely prevail in a battle between the Hulk and Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World. Even though Red Hulk is far stronger than Smart Hulk, Smart Hulk still has the chance to undo his most recent metamorphosis and return to his former, angry persona for a titanic battle with Red Hulk. But it’s unlikely that this confrontation will take place anytime soon. President Ross’ transformation into Red Hulk in the White House has received a lot of attention in the teasers for Captain America: Brave New World, indicating that Red Hulk will only make an appearance in one action sequence. However, a lot of video hasn’t been released yet because the advertising materials for Captain America: Brave New World have only hinted at Red Hulk’s heat powers. Similar to how Red Hulk’s heat powers are likely to be kept secret until Captain America: Brave New World opens, there may be a lot of additional scenes involving Harrison Ford’s President Ross that aren’t revealed until February 14.
