The Director of Madame Web talks about the difficulties of maintaining Cassandra Webb’s clairvoyance

The director of Madame Web, S.J. Clarkson, discussed how Cassandra Webb, the lead character, used her clairvoyant abilities in the film. In a recent interview, Clarkson was asked how she created the appearance of the powers in question. The vision sequences were described as having a “kaleidoscope kind of feel,” to which she replied, “I love that you used the word kaleidoscopic because I talked about that, about a kaleidoscope of things coming towards her.” To be honest, I was a little taken aback by the script’s description ofclairvoyance and wondered how I would go about using it. Subsequently, my thoughts turned to memory. Have you ever noticed how memories or old events may suddenly and violently resurface? I said to myself, “All right, let’s think about that, but that will happen later.” Cassandra’s clairvoyance, according to Clarkson, is similar to memory, but it works backwards or forwards. But that’s what caught my attention the most, Clarkson said, explaining how memory frequently presents itself to you in a non-linear slipstream of frantic pictures that aren’t always entirely sure how they go together. It was then about using it as a kind of anchor and figuring out how to make it as dynamic, bright, scary, and exhilarating as possible.

Not only has Clarkson revealed further behind-the-scenes details about Madame Web, but she had previously talked about the reason Sydney Sweeney’s Julia Cornwall’s Spider-Woman mask lacked lenses. “Many artists’ take on all the characters,” Clarkson said, “exist, but they change and evolve, so I guess what we did is really paid attention and looked across the board at all of them,” ultimately determining which design we felt worked best. And what also proved effective for our performers. Regarding Madame Web specifically, Clarkson also discussed the project’s relationship to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe in January, declaring that Cassandra is “definitely in a standalone world” and that she was allowed creative freedom rather from feeling pressured to turn the movie into something else. Clarkson’s comments align with those of producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura from 2023, in which he declared that the film tells Madame Web’s narrative. Di Bonaventura continued, saying that fans of Spider-Man will like Madame Web as they are familiar with her from the comic books, despite the fact that she “doesn’t really have that big a character in the comic books.”
