The director of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is kept up at night by an overlooked plot hole in the game.

One of the biggest games of the year was Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which boasts a larger world and story than its predecessor. However, a significant plot hole has been identified by some fans in the game’s opening sequence. In order to assist Miles Morales in defeating the Sandman, one of Peter’s oldest enemies, in a large, expansive boss fight that spans many set pieces and switches player control between both Spider-Men, Peter Parker leaves the high school class he is teaching at the beginning of the game. One big problem, though, is that the first game has a souvenir that informs players that Sandman has been imprisoned in a laboratory vial full of sand for the prior two games. This introduces a massive narrative hole that the game’s director, Bryan Intihar, said he had forgotten about during production. “You know what keeps me up at night? This,” Intihar remarked in an interview, “I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I never considered that?'” when you guys discuss it. “What will we do now?”

While exploring Insomniac’s New York City, players might discover backpack collectibles in Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4, which included allusions to several characters from Spider-Man’s extensive supporting cast as well as comic book easter eggs. A vial purportedly holding the sand that contains Flint Marko’s, also known as Sandman’s, soul is found in one of these bags. In spite of this, Kraven the Hunter, the game’s secondary enemy, targets the villain in Spider-Man 2 when he manages to escape the vial. It is unclear how he did this. Intihar made just a cursory effort to offer an explanation for the continuity mistake, noting merely that Sandman had somehow escaped between the first and second games and was currently on the loose. Naturally, as seen in the original game, Spider-Man’s antagonists are infamous for being hard to imprison for very long since, very soon after the wall-crawler locks them up, they nearly always manage to get out and resume their criminal activities. Sandman may have just as easily flown the coop off-screen in a same fashion. Despite this, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 received excellent reviews upon release, and a new teaser from Insomniac highlights the game’s numerous awards from different publications. With improved traversal mechanics and combat capabilities, Venom as the primary antagonist, and playable characters with distinct skill sets—both Peter Parker and Miles Morales’ Spider-Men—it has swiftly become one of the best-selling games of 2023.
