The Disney+ and Marvel Studios limited series’ director of Secret Invasion, Ali Selim, reveals which moment was the most challenging to shoot. Selim was asked during an interview which scenario made him the most nervous after reading the conclusion to Secret Invasion. “Those fight scenes, the explosion in Episode 1, and the ambush in Episode 4 — they’re huge, but they’re not that challenging,” he said. “You work on them for months with a team of storyboard artists, then you break the storyboards down into stunts, then they break the stunts down in another unit, and then you bring in visual effects to add the finishing touches. It never seems like ‘Oh, this is such a challenge.’ There are so many amazing people running the marathon with you and so much that takes you to the finish line.
Selim continued, citing a scene in which Nick Fury and G’iah were talking about the death of the latter’s father Talos in the fifth episode, as an example of how difficult it is to find pathos in some situations and the “human emotion and vulnerability” of the programme. Selim said, “And for me, Episode 6 has a major fight, but there’s also this extremely sensitive talk between a shattered Gravik and a truly damaged Fury, who we eventually find out is G’iah. But while you watch it, you hear two men apologise to each other, which is somewhat revolutionary. Would you ever imagine Biden and Putin apologising to one other in a room? In my opinion, no. Making those moments authentic and convincing that they are a part of a larger conflicting tale is difficult. My task was made a lot easier by Kingsley Ben-Adir and Samuel L. Jackson, two outstanding actors.
When Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced the event, Selim said it was “a discussion of paper, scissors, rock” as to which powers would dominate each other. He continued by describing how G’iah and Gravik’s Super Skrull powers for their confrontation in the finale were chosen. Selim also disclosed the duration of James Rhodes’ Skrull status, remarking that it began during Captain America: Civil War as a result of the actual Rhodey’s non-functioning legs. The fact that Rhodey had red blood in Avengers: Endgame and not a Skrull’s green blood, together with the fact that he couldn’t have been a Skrull back then, have led many fans to dismiss this theory.
