The Falcon and The Winter Soldier deleted scene shows Sam and Rhodey Reconcile

Col. James Rhodes, played by Don Cheadle, was unmasked as a Skrull impostor in the 2023 Disney+ series Secret Invasion. However, a deleted scene from 2021’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier shows that Marvel explored presenting this narrative twist much earlier. The “Flight Lesson” clip, shared by IGN on X and featured as an extra on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier 4K UHD and Blu-ray release, takes place early in Episode 1, after Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson delivers a speech at a museum ceremony showcasing Captain America’s shield. The sequence reveals the loving but slightly awkward camaraderie between Sam and Rhodey, who were on opposing sides in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, when Sam unwittingly caused Rhodey’s debilitating injury.

Despite this, they enjoy a pleasant conversation, and Rhodey expresses no hatred against Sam. He appeared to have completely recovered, mentioning a recent treatment that mended his seriously wounded spine and allowed him to walk again. However, the narrative of Secret Invasion reveals that the person Sam was speaking with is actually a Skrull impostor.

Gravik’s Skrull group kidnapped the actual Rhodey and numerous other political and military elites, replacing them with sleeper operatives. Rhodey is rescued during the Secret Invasion season finale but remains unable to walk without help. This implies that he was captured between the 2016 airport conflict and the events of Avengers: Endgame in 2023. On April 30, 2024, Disney Home Entertainment will release The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: The Complete First Season on 4K UHD and Blu-ray in collector packaging. The extras include a humor reel, a film called “Cap’s Shield,” the documentary Assembled: The Making of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and deleted sequences labeled “Flight Lesson” and “Still Not Funny.” Despite being a popular favorite, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier never received a second season. The news saddened Mackie, who was excited to perform additional episodes. “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, I really enjoyed doing that show,” he told me. “I was genuinely happy to do a second season, simply so Sebastian Stan and I could be paid to hang together. Because it’s similar to me, him, and Daniel Brühl. “It’s like the perfect storm of happiness.”
