Gavin J. Konop, the writer/director of Spider-Man: Lotus, has released a new teaser for the forthcoming fan film. The moving trailer includes previously unseen material, including a new look at the fan film’s depiction of Green Goblin. The upcoming non-profit fan film is loosely based on the popular Spider-Man stories “The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man” from 1983’s The Amazing Spider-Man, which centres on Spider-Man visiting a terminally ill child, and Spider-Man: Blue, which examines Peter Parker’s relationship with Gwen Stacy and sees the young superhero returning to the location where Gwen was killed by the Green Goblin.
“Following the tragic death of his former girlfriend, seemingly caused by his own attempt to save her, Peter Parker (Warden Wayne) lingers in his guilt of the past, questioning whether the curse of his alter ego should be buried for good,” the Spider-Man: Lotus description states. “When Peter is informed that a terminally ill child has requested to meet Spider-Man, he mulls over the decision to console him in his final days.” When Spider-Man: Lotus was first revealed, it was met with enthusiasm by the Marvel fanbase. However, as multiple images of Warden Wayne – the actor who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Lotus – making racist and homophobic remarks surfaced online, the film became mired in controversy. Following the posting of an official statement by Konop regretting the actor’s previous faults, some fans began releasing pictures indicating that the writer-director had made equally racist comments on Instagram. Lotus’ VFX crew left the fan film, and Konop deleted his Twitter account as a result.
On July 3, 2023, Konop returned to Twitter. On July 8, he revealed that Spider-Man: Lotus will be available for free on YouTube on August 10. “After three and a half years of work, I can finally say that Spider-Man: Lotus is nearing completion. And I never imagined I’d be saying that since it all started as a child’s fantasy. And now it’s the work of hundreds of artists who have put in so much time and effort into the film,” Konop said in a video message uploaded on Twitter. “I made this video as a tribute to not only the journey of making the film, but also as a thank you to the entire cast and crew who have poured their hearts and souls into making this film a reality.” So, thank you from that little boy who always wanted to make his Spider-Man movie.”
